'He’s Unwatchable': Luka Doncic Gets Brutally Called Out for His Constant Complaints About Referees

Luka Doncic is putting up numbers that belong on a highlight reel, scoring 32.8 points, 8.5 assists, and 7.7 rebounds per game, leading the Los Angeles Lakers as the team’s primary sharpshooter.

On paper, that résumé makes a strong case for MVP consideration. On the floor, though, a growing chorus of analysts is zeroing in on his possession-by-possession arguments with officials that have become as much a part of Doncic’s game as his step-back three.

The Slovenian star has carried that odd reputation since his Dallas Mavericks days, but the Boston Celtics applied their signature physical brand of defense against him and Lakers on Sunday night.

The Lakers lost 111–89 at home, and Doncic was once again at the center of media criticism for his behavior toward officials during the blowout loss.

Zach Lowe goes nuclear on Luka Doncic’s constant ref arguing

Doncic was seen “griping at referees” throughout the night, particularly over no-calls on his drives as the Celtics’ physical defense led by Jaylen Brown limited him to 25 points on 9-of-22 shooting. His constant complaints irritated the Ringer’s Zach Lowe, who called out Doncic’s treatment of the officials in unusually blunt terms.

He said, “The whining is back to peak Dallas levels. It’s every f—— play. Just play, man. Not everything is a foul. Are you playing to draw a foul, or are you playing basketball? Are you playing one-on-one with the refs? It’s every possession now. It’s completely out of control. It’s unwatchable.”

Lowe called the 26-year-old a “literal basketball genius” who can make any play imaginable. However, he argued that constant complaining ruins the team’s rhythm and hurts their transition defense, damaging the Lakers on both ends of the floor

However, Lowe wasn’t alone in the film room on this one. Colin Cowherd piled on from a different angle, questioning whether the fit between Doncic and LeBron James has ever truly clicked.

“We’re a year into the Luka trade, and it’s still not working out that well,” Cowherd said on “The Herd.” “It can’t take this long. And it’s not on 41-year-old LeBron to make it work; it’s on Luka to make it work.

He added, “Two things can be true: The Lakers stole him from the Mavs, and it was a great trade. Secondly, he is aging quickly. The numbers don’t lie. He gets four times more technicals than dunks. His athleticism is regressing.”

Max Kellerman argued that he had a similar feeling, noting that head coach JJ Redick seemed equally obsessed with a missed call during his post-game press conference. Kellerman even joked that if Doncic ever gets a statue at the arena, it should show him mid-argument with an official.

Multiple reporters and NBA insiders have now publicly voiced frustration with Doncic’s approach to officiating, and the chemistry between Doncic, Austin Reaves, and LeBron has remained a work in progress deep into the 2025-26 season.

The Lakers are 34-22, sitting fifth in the Western Conference. The record seems good enough to stay in the playoff picture, but not good enough to quiet the noise.

Doncic and the Lakers face the Orlando Magic at home tonight. They lead 51–43 in the second quarter, but it remains to be seen who will come out on top.
