Portland Trail Blazers fans rejoiced when the news about Damian Lillard‘s return was first reported. After two seasons with the Milwaukee Bucks, Lillard was waived, which allowed the Blazers to sign him to a new deal. The star guard is arguably the best player of the franchise, but he decided to find a more successful situation in 2023.
Unfortunately for Lillard, the grass isn’t always greener. Although he was in the playoffs with Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Bucks twice, they were both first-round exits. On top of that, he suffered a devastating Achilles tear in their postseason series against the Indiana Pacers in April.
This time, he’s back with the team that drafted him. He signed a three-year, $42 million contract with the Blazers.
One of the reasons he left the Portland Trail Blazers was for him to contend for a championship. In the NBA, winning the Larry O’Brien trophy secures a star’s legacy. However, Hall of Famer Dwyane Wade believes that Lillard doesn’t need to win it to secure his legacy.
According to Wade, his return to Portland has stamped his legacy.
“With Dame, legacy in the NBA would be way bigger than the championship,” Wade said. “I think every player that comes to this league, legacy is not just built on winning a championship and we gotta stop doing that.
“Dame, to me, is one of those players that if he never sniffs a championship, it doesn’t change the fact that he’s a bad motherf**ker. His legacy in Portland is stamped. What he do from this point on, is even more legacy building.”
Dwyane Wade says Damian Lillard is a legend regardless of whether he wins a ring or not

Lillard has established his name as one of the best players in the Blazers’ history. He’s the leader in franchise points, 3-pointers made, offensive win shares and free throws made. With the contributions he’s made, the former Weber State guard will have a lasting impact in Portland’s history books.
For most NBA fans, seeing Damian Lillard play for the Bucks was a strange look. He spent 11 seasons with the Portland Trail Blazers, where he established himself and, at one point, elevated the team to a championship contender. However, the lack of success led him to ask out and try a different route to potentially play for a championship.
Last week, Sean Highkin of The Rose Garden Report talked to the Blazers’ general manager, Joe Cronin. He revealed what it felt like seeing Lillard play for a different team.
“It never felt right seeing Damian in a different jersey. We’re really excited to bring him back to Portland,” Cronin said.

Lillard played for the Portland Trail Blazers for a long time so it’s almost impossible not to think about the NBA star when the organization is mentioned. Fortunately, he’s back with the team and it’s likely that he’ll stay put with them.
