The Hornets are riding the hottest streak in the franchise history over the past decade, and Thursday night’s road game against the Houston Rockets represents their biggest test yet.

Charlotte brings a seven-game winning streak into Toyota Center, looking to make it eight straight against a Rockets team that holds  fourth place in the Western Conference at 31-18. For a Hornets squad that has completely transformed its season, this matchup offers a chance to prove their recent surge is more than just a hot stretch.

Hornets Look to Extend 7-Game Winning Streak vs. Rockets

Brandon Miller’s Breakout Leading the Charge

The Hornets’ incredible  turnaround has been fueled by the breakout performance of third-year forward Brandon Miller, who has just named Eastern Conference Player of the Week for the first time in his career. Miller has been absolutely scorching during Charlotte’s winning streak, averaging 23.7 points while 48.7% from the field and a blistering 41.7% from three-point range over his last six games.

Perhaps most impressively, Miller went a perfect 25-of-25 from the free throw line last week, showcasing the complete offensive arsenal that has made him one of the NBA’s most improved players this season. Before the game against New Orleans, He was riding a ten-game streak of scoring 20 or more points, averaging 20.6 points per game for the season.

Miller’s emergence as a legitimate star has given the Hornets exactly what they needed: a reliable second scoring option alongside LaMelo Ball who can take over games when necessary. His ability to score from all three level has made Charlotte’s offense nearly impossible to defend during this winning streak.

From 11-22 to Playoff Contention

It’s hard to overstate just how dramatic Charlotte’s turnaround has been. After stumbling to an 11-22 start that had many ready to write off the season, the Hornets have posted a remarkable 12-6 record since the start of 2026, tied for the most wins in the entire NBA during that span.

This seven-game winning streak is the franchise’s longest in over ten years, dating back to the 2016 playoff team. More importantly, Charlotte now sits just half a game out of the Eastern Conference Play-in Tournament, turning what looked like a lost season into a genuine playoff push.

LaMelo Ball continues to orchestrate the offense brilliantly, averaging 19.1 points and 7.5 assists per game while keeping defenses honest with his scoring ability and court vision. Rookie sensation Kon Knueppel has been equally impressive, winning Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month for the third consecutive month while averaging 18.7 points and shooting 42.5% from three-point range.

The Hornets’ improved defense has been just as crucial to their success. In their comeback victory against New Orleans on Monday, Charlotte held the Pelicans to just 31 second-half points, a season-best defensive performance that demonstrates this team has found an identity on both ends of the floor.

The Rockets Present a Formidable Challenge

Houston enters Thursday’s game on the second night of a back-to-back after falling to the Boston Celtics on Wednesday. Kevin Durant returned from a left ankle sprain to play 33 minutes against the Celtics, and while he struggled somewhat with his shot (15 points on 4-of-11 shooting, 0-for-4 from three), his presence on the floor for such a long period of time suggests he’s fully recovered and will be available for Thursday’s game.

Durant’s return is significant for Houston, as he’s been nothing short of spectacular in his first season with the Rockets. The 37-year-old is averaging 25.9 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 4.5 assists per game while shooting 50.8% from the field and was recently selected to his 15th All-star Game.

The Rockets also feature Alperen Sengun, the talented center who’s averaging 21.2 points, 9.4 rebounds, and 6.2 assists per game while shooting 49.9% from the field, presents a difficult matchup for Charlotte’s frontcourt and will require significant defensive attention throughout the night.

Keys to Victory for Charlotte

For the Hornets to extend their winning streak to eight games, they’ll need to exploit Houston’s back-to-back situation. Even teams with deep rosters struggle on the second night of consecutive games, and Charlotte’s ability to push pace could wear down a tired Rockets squad.

Brandon Miller must bounce back from a tough shooting night. Despite going 2-for-12 from three in his previous game, Miller’s overall impact during the winning streak has been undeniable. If Miller can find his three-point rhythm against Houston, it will force their defense to extend and open up driving lanes for Ball and Knueppel.

Defensively, Charlotte needs another strong performance like they showed against New Orleans. Durant will get his points—he always does—but limiting Houston’s role players and making Sengun work for every basket will be essential. The Hornets can’t afford to give up easy looks or allow the Rockets to get into rhythm from three-point range.

LaMelo Ball’s decision-making will be critical as well. Houston’s defense will try to speed him up and force turnovers, so Ball needs to control the tempo and make sure Charlotte gets quality shots rather than forcing the issue in transition.

Can the Streak Continue?

This game represents exactly the kind of challenge Charlotte needs. The Hornets have dominated Eastern Conference opponents during their winning streak, but beating a 31-18 Western Conference team on the road would send a clear message that this turnaround is legitimate.

Houston may be on a back-to-back, but they’re still a talented, well-coached team with multiple ways to beat you. Durant’s experience and Sengun’s interior dominance present matchup problems that Charlotte hasn’t faced during most of their winning streak.

However, momentum is a real thing in the NBA, and the Hornets have it right now. They’re playing with confidence, their stars are performing at elite levels, and they’ve shown the ability to win in different ways, whether by shooting lights out or grinding out defensive victories.

For a franchise trying to return to playoff relevance after years of struggles, Thursday night in Houston offers a golden opportunity. A win would extend the streak to eight games, further solidify their play-in positioning, and prove that Charlotte’s transformation from lottery team to playoff contender is the real deal.

The game tips off at 8:00 PM ET from Toyota Center. The Hornets have already exceeded expectations with this seven-game streak. Now it’s time to see if they can keep the magic going against one of the Western Conference’s best.
