How Could Wemby's Spurs Trade for Stephen Curry?
Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

While the San Antonio Spurs deserve credit for making progress as a fringe playoff team, Victor Wembanyama's patience will wane if they don't at least make the 2025 Play-In Tournament. Meanwhile, the Golden State Warriors also find themselves outside looking in of playoff competition. If Stephen Curry opts to leave the only franchises for which he's played, the Spurs have an avenue to land the superstar.

A mega mock trade provides the Spurs with Curry.

Before making such a blockbuster trade, one must dissect the Warriors and Spurs' predicament.

The Warriors began their season 12-3, as they surged momentarily for the best record in the Western Conference before the Oklahoma City Thunder overlapped them by miles.

With injuries and role players regressing to their mean, the Warriors have since fallen to the 12th seed in the Western Conference, one seed behind the Spurs. Although the Warriors trading Curry during the 2024-25 season is far-fetched, especially as they have a chance to make the playoffs, perhaps with Curry's blessing, they'll acquire significant future assets for their 36-year-old superstar.

Warriors star core Curry and Draymond Green are on record for the franchise not pursuing "mortgage-risking" trades. Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy's track record coincides with his stars' disposition, such as when he decided not to trade for Utah Jazz star Lauri Markkanen or even Chicago Bulls Zach LaVine.

Given the backstory of the Warriors and Spurs, the trade would theoretically make sense for both teams.

The Warriors would receive an intriguing young player in Devin Vassell, a reunion with Harrison Barnes, the Bulls' 2025 first-round pick, the Atlanta Hawks' 2027 first-round pick, the New Orleans' 2027 second-round pick, and the Denver Nuggets' 2027 second-round pick.

While the first half of the trade helps the Warriors, even at 36, Curry is likely worth more than two first-round picks. The Warriors fan base would likely crush the front office for giving up their franchise-saving superstar for two potential lottery picks.

Furthermore, if the Warriors make a trade for disgruntled Miami Heat star Jimmy Butler, Curry is unlikely to leave the franchise that attempted to make another championship run.

However, if the Spurs add more to the figurative pot, perhaps the Warriors would feel more comfortable trading Curry.

Nonetheless, this is all theoretical and won't come to fruition like most trade machine experiments.
