The Golden State Warriors won 46 games for the 2023-24 season. Ultimately, Golden State missed the playoffs despite Stephen Curry playing MVP-like through stretches of the campaign. However, the Warriors' energy and defense suffered without Draymond Green on the floor. Green had his hands all over Tuesday's 120-117 victory over the Dallas Mavericks. The four-time champion showcased a defensive masterclass.
During Green's 2023-24 season of self-inflicted punishment, the Warriors' defense fell to 15th in defensive rating. Although undersized, Green's athleticism and natural know-how on defense inject next-level competition into the Warriors' figurative veins. Green can do it all: protect the rim and secure the perimeter.
With Green healthy and fully committed to staying on the court, the Warrior's defense flirts with their championship-era production. Ranked fifth in defensive rating, Green repelled the Mavericks' forceful runs in Tuesday's Emirates NBA Cup match.
Signature "mean-mugs" and physical celebrations stemmed from Green's defensive efforts elated the Chase Center crowd.
"Man, this feels like Oracle," Green said in postgame media availability.
Green played like the Oracle-era Warriors, hitting open 3s, moving the ball precisely, and attacking his defensive assignments within the basketball rules. The Warriors' defensive juggernaut dominated the Mavericks in an instant classic matchup. Green recorded three steals, two blocks, and seven rebounds.
In the final two minutes of the back-and-forth fourth quarter, the Warriors needed someone to deflate the Mavs' momentum. Green took the job, equipped with a menacing glare. Mavs center Daniel Gafford went up for a dunk with his team up 114-113, and the result ended in embarrassment for the visiting team. Green seemingly discouraged the Mavs' momentum with a single block.
Although Green's block ignited a Warriors' fast break, he had enough time to stare down Gafford, evoking memories of Golden State's defensive dominance.
The Warriors' 9-2 record has much to do with Green's elite defense and buy-in of Mike Dunleavy Jr.'s roster decisions.
