The San Antonio Spurs took on the New York Knicks for their 12th Christmas Game in franchise history and their first one since they played the Chicago Bulls in 2016. The Spurs lost 117-114 but with Victor Wembanyama on the roster, the Spurs should get plenty of marquee matchups in coming years.
Last time the Spurs took on the Knicks, the Spurs won in overtime despite Jalen Brunson scoring 61 points. San Antonio was carried by Wembanyama’s 40 points and 20 rebounds.
With revenge on his mind, Brunson scored 20 points and dished out X assists. As a team, the Knicks were led by Mikal Bridges’ 41 points
Wembanyama posted 42 points, 18 rebounds, four assists, and four blocks. He shot 6-16 from deep. Jeremy Sochan, in his first Christmas game, added 21 points.
Rookie Stephon Castle’s mother celebrated her 50th birthday on the holiday and her and her husband watched the Spurs practice at Madison Square Garden before the game. As a surprise, his family presented him with his 2024 NCAA championship ring, which he won with the UConn Huskies.
It is worth noting that for the fourth straight game Zach Collins was healthy but did not suit up for the Spurs. Trade rumors will likely continue to gain steam before the New Year.
The Spurs will continue their road trip on Friday as they travel to take on the Brooklyn Nets in the Barclays Center.
