Although the NBA All-Star weekend flustered a large portion of the league's fans, at least the Golden State Warriors fans witnessed their superstar seizing the moment. The hosting on-court ambassador of the All-Star weekend, Stephen Curry, dominated the three-day event by winning a prestigious award.
In the first and possibly last rendition of the NBA's constant tweaking of the All-Star game, Curry played in two games to 40 points in one night. As a member of TNT's Shaquille O'Neal-picked roster and the Kenny Atkinson-coached team "The "OGs,' Curry led a unit rich with veteran superstars, such as Kevin Durant and James Harden, with 15 points in the deciding game.
The All-Star game caters to Curry's marvel-filled repertoire of offense. Curry flourished in games riddled with athletic savants, as he shot multiple shots from deep to great success and made logic-defying layup attempts, including a floater from a 3-point distance.
Curry carried the torch against younger All-Stars and TNT's Candace Parker's Rising Stars team. For his efforts, the four-time NBA champion earned his second All-Star Game MVP, also known as the Kobe Bryant Award, since the NBA modified the trophy's name in the wake of his death in 2020.
The Warriors star is the 17th player to win such an award as the hosting player and only the 15th to win it multiple times.
Dallas Mavericks All-Star Kyrie Irving spoke about Curry's greatness and why he deserved to win his second All-Star game MVP, especially as a fitting host for All-Star weekend.
"It's easy to feed the hot guy, man and once he hit his first 3, basically every time we were looking for him," Irving said. "When he's in his hometown and playing in front of his home crowd, we all know what that means as an NBA player, as his peer. So, we're not going to get in the way of that, man."
Numerous stars didn't appreciate the long delays in action during and before the tournament-style All-Star games. However, as the weekend ambassador, Curry valiantly spoke of what it means for the Chase Center in San Francisco to host the star-studded event.
"The hosting experience was unbelievable," Curry said when asked about the Warriors welcoming the All-Star events in both Oakland and San Francisco. "I'm not going to complain about being tired or exhausted. This is an honor and a blessing to be able to celebrate and share this beautiful Bay Area that's been a part of my life for the last 16 years, the basketball history and culture that's here and the amazing fans that are here and the impact that the game being here has had on both cities."
As a player in his twilight years, Curry's winning such an award speaks to the years he has left as a capable star. While he would rather hoist the Larry O'Brien trophy in June, carrying the torch for the NBA among the league's future stars speaks to Curry's greatness.
