On Saturday night, the San Antonio Spurs lost to the Denver Nuggets 122-111. In the second half of a back-to-back against Nikola Jokic and the Nuggets, the Spurs split the season series, although Denver needed overtime to finish the job.
For his birthday, Victor Wembanyama said all he wanted was a win. The Spurs didn't quite pull through, but he built an MVP case by beating the three-time MVP on Friday before barely falling in overtime.
Wemby ranked fifth in the latest NBA MVP ladder, but that was before the Spurs offered tough battles against Denver.
For the second straight game, Wembanyama was dominant, scoring 20 points to go along with a career-high 23 rebounds and four blocks. He was not the Spurs' leading scorer, as Harrison Barnes added 22 points on 4-8 shooting from deep. Both Stephon Castle and Julian Champagnie scored double-figures off the bench.
The Nuggets, unsurprisingly, were led by Jokic, who scored 46 points and dished out ten assists to go with nine rebounds.
With 14 seconds left in regulation, Devin Vassell tipped in one of his own missed shots to tie the game back up. He was surrounded by Jokic, Russell Westbrook, and Michael Porter Jr. but managed to fight for the offensive rebound. However, costly turnovers and poor shooting in overtime kept the Spurs from winning.
The Spurs are only two and a half games behind the Los Angeles Lakers for the fourth seed in the Western Conference. San Antonio was expected to improve from their 22-60 season last year, but making the playoffs outright and avoiding the Play-In Tournament entirely was the boldest of takes entering the year.
With two games between two of the best players in the NBA going down to the final possession and overtime, maybe the league will learn that broadcasting the Spurs on national television is a good idea. Both games were only broadcast on local channels and NBA League Pass, which is not nearly as accessible as ESPN, TNT, or ABC.
The Spurs will have a day off tomorrow before taking on the Chicago Bulls in the Windy City on Monday night.
