On Sunday, the San Antonio Spurs completed a three-team trade that added De'Aaron Fox and Jordan McLaughlin in exchange for Tre Jones, Sidy Cissoko, and Zach Collins. The Spurs were quickly lauded as the winner of the trade, as Fox, Chris Paul, and rookie Stephon Castle formed a formidable point guard rotation.
However, Castle may emerge as a better shooting guard than point guard, and Paul is only signed through this season, so their depth moving forward might be up in the air. However, McLaughlin could be an underrated pickup if the Spurs want to re-sign the 28-year-old.
In limited playing time this season, McLaughlin averaged 1.9 points and 0.9 assists, but in his biggest role with the Minnesota Timberwolves, he averaged five points and 3.8 assists.
He is a heady defender despite being undersized and can change up the pace, similar to how Jones did for the Spurs, although McLaughlin is a better shooter
"I'm going to go in there and provide energy and effort like I always do," he said to the media. "I've been in the league six years now, so I sort of know the schemes offensively and defensively, what teams are trying to do, so hopefully I get acclimated pretty quickly."
While he won't be a star like Fox and might not be a long-term fixture for the Silver and Black, he is ready to play winning basketball and prove himself on his new team.
"Whatever it takes to help this team win, I'll do," he finished.
Both McLaughlin and Fox are expected to make their debut for the Spurs on Wednesday night against the Atlanta Hawks, which will be broadcast on ESPN.
