How Draymond Green's apology to Karl-Anthony Towns made things even worse

It was one thing when Draymond Green publicly mentioned the false rumor that Karl-Anthony Towns skipped the New York Knicks' Tuesday matchup with the Golden State Warriors to avoid Jimmy Butler.

However, the four-time NBA champion's "apology" for spreading misinformation on his podcast was downright infuriating.

A reporter informed Green on Friday that Towns was attending a loved one's funeral at the time. The former Defensive Player of the Year offered his well wishes but also tried to justify his actions.

"Oh, man, That’s unfortunate. I’m sorry to hear that. That sucks," Green said. "But my comments that I made, was that 'what I heard was this.' And that’s what I heard. So I do send my well wishes to him and his family."

A simple "I'm sorry to KAT, I shouldn't have said what I said" would've sufficed, but the 35-year-old did not have that in mind.

"We all experience death in one way or another, and we’ll all experience it the same way one day. So it’s unfortunate," he continued. "You never wish that on anybody. But the 'Draymond Green Show with Baron Davis' must go on. I definitely wish them well and wish their family well. You know, we all go through that. And it’s never easy for anyone. But the 'Draymond Green Show with Baron Davis' will go on."

Green either didn't understand or purposely failed to acknowledge that it's irresponsible to repeat a rumor on a large platform without researching it first. Doing due diligence is more considerate to the subject and helps avoid falsehoods.

Additionally, the "KAT is scared of Butler" narrative never made sense to begin with. Towns scored 44 points (17-25 FG, 4-5 3 PT) with 13 rebounds vs. Butler and the Miami Heat in the Knicks' 116-107 win on Oct. 30, and has a 6-3 record against him.

Towns and Butler famously had beef originating from their time together on the Minnesota Timberwolves from 2017-19. Butler criticized Towns and Andrew Wiggins' work ethic and eventually forced a trade to the Philadelphia 76ers. Jimmy Buckets then called KAT a "loser" during a Wolves-Heat game in 2021.

Green wasn't the only person to repeat the rumor on a big platform, but that doesn't excuse what he did. Also, the "show must go on" comment was unnecessary and self-serving. Giving well-wishes to somebody grieving is not the time to promote a podcast.

This situation should be a reminder to Green, Chris Broussard and any other popular basketball media figure who pushed this inaccurate narrative to be careful when making public claims about people.
