How ‘dream’ continues for Spurs free agent signee

Though his season was cut short well before a magical San Antonio Spurs season ended, David Jones Garcia proved one of the franchise’s many feel-good stories in the 2025-2026 season. In re-signing the 24-year-old player to a two-way contract during NBA free agency, the organization continues its relationship with the 2025 NBA All-Summer League First Team performer in Las Vegas.

Jones Garcia appeared in 11 games for San Antonio last season, averaging 2.9 points, 1.2 rebounds and 1.6 assists in 6.2 minutes. While those statistics don’t stand out, one particular Jones Garcia performance did.

This past November 20th, the Spurs were missing Victor Wembanyama, Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper all because of injuries. The Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic native stepped up, scoring 12 points, dishing out six assists and grabbing five rebounds on a night in which his +25 was easily the best +/- rating in a 135-126 victory vs. the Atlanta Hawks. Following that effort, ClutchPoints asked the undrafted wing player if the outing represented a dream come true.

“Yes, most definitely. Proud of myself. Hope my dad is proud of me as well.”

Jones Garcia’s father died while he was playing for St. John’s during the 2022-2023 season. The Red Storm were one of three colleges Jones Garcia played for, along with the DePaul Blue Demons and Memphis Tigers. He promised his father he would eventually play in the NBA.

That opportunity came after Jones Garcia impressed, and San Antonio signed him to a two-way deal in July 2025.

Additionally, in 16 games with the organization’s G League affiliate Austin Spurs last season, he averaged a team-high 26.3 points, 6.8 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 1.8 steals in 32.7 minutes. He was selected to compete in the 2026 Castrol Rising Stars game during NBA All-Star Weekend before suffering a season-ending right ankle injury in early February.

David Jones Garcia’s continued road to the Spurs

Jones Garcia led the Spurs in scoring in the 2026 Summer League at 22 points per game. On a team that featured Harper and Carter Bryant, Jones Garcia paced the Spurs in all but one of those eight contests in Sacramento and Nevada. He led the squad with 18, 25, and 25 points in the California Summer Classic, then put up 24, 21, 28, 12 and 23 in Las Vegas. The game in which he scored 12 not only represented the team’s only loss in Vegas, it also marked the only time Jones-Garcia didn’t pace the squad in points. Shooting 53% from three-point land, he also averaged six rebounds per game.

Meanwhile, Harper went on to enjoy a solid rookie campaign before catapulting into national attention during San Antonio’s sprint to the NBA Finals. Bryant became a solid member of the Spurs rotation throughout their run.

Prior to arriving in the Alamo City, Jones Garcia split the 2024-25 season between the G League’s Salt Lake City Stars and Mexico City Capitanes. He appeared in 31 total games and averaged 24.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.5 steals in 32.8 minutes, earning NBA G League All-Rookie Team honors.

The Teays Valley Christian High School product played four collegiate seasons at DePaul (2020-22), St. John’s (2022-23) and Memphis (2023-24), appearing in 100 career games. As a senior at Memphis, he averaged 21.8 points, 7.6 rebounds and 2.2 steals, finished sixth in the nation in scoring and earned First Team All-American Athletic Conference honors.
