The Golden State Warriors were without superstar Stephen Curry for Saturday's game against the Memphis Grizzlies. Despite that, they managed to secure a solid 121-113 victory for their second win in a row.
With no Curry in the lineup, players like Andrew Wiggins and Dennis Schroder stepped up. Wiggins poured in a game-high 24 points for Golden State. Meanwhile, Schroder had his best game in a Warriors jersey. The veteran guard finished the contest with 17 points and nine assists.
At the post-game press conference, one reporter pointed out to Warriors head coach Steve Kerr that the team was 5-2 in the games where Curry was unavailable. Kerr knew to choose his words wisley from there.
"I gotta be careful about answering this," Kerr joked. "I can see the headline now, 'Kerr says Warriors better without Curry.' I know I know how you guys operate."
The Warriors head coach then proceeded to answer the question seriously.
"[It is] hugely important," Kerr told reporters. "I said at the beginning of the year, I've felt really good about our ability this year to to win games without Steph, to win games without Draymond [Green]. I think we've been able to do both just based on the depth of our roster."
Kerr continued: "We have a lot of guys who are dying to play and ready to play when when other people are out. It's fantastic to be able to to win a game against a great team without Steph and get him the rest he needs for for tomorrow's game. ...So, it's a big, big night for us."
The Warriors coach made sure to praise one of the key performers previously mentioned.
"I think Dennis has a lot to do with our ability to to keep playing through Steph's absences," Kerr said. "[He was] handling the ball, guarding the ball, getting us organized."
Curry should be back in the lineup for the Warriors against the Sacramento Kings on Sunday. Being able to rest an aging superstar comfortably feels like a luxury that not every team has in the NBA.
