How Jaylin Williams' Return From Injury Helps Oklahoma City
USA TODAY Sports

It's early November, and Oklahoma City is still a game above .500. Wednesday night's collapse against the Pelicans was unacceptable, but it's nowhere close to panic time for the Thunder. Even with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander sidelined for the in-season tournament opener, the Thunder have enough talent to find a way.

Oklahoma City got good news on Friday, as Jaylin Williams was listed as available to play. He suffered a hamstring injury during the Thunder's preseason slate and has been sidelined throughout the first five games of the season. Chet Holmgren has been terrific, but the Thunder clearly missed Williams in the lineup.

Holmgren has struggled against bigger centers, like Jonas Valanciunas and Nikola Jokic. Of course, Williams isn't going to slow Jokic down, but his availability can really help Holmgren preserve energy and absorb a few less blows on the court.

Mark Daigneault has played Olivier Sarr on a two-way deal with the lack of depth in the front court, and Ousmane Dieng has even gotten some run at the center spot. When Holmgren is off the floor, the Thunder struggle mightily.

With Williams back in the lineup, the Thunder can rely on Holmgren less and find a way to get him rest in between stretches.

Williams was a pleasant surprise for the Thunder a season ago, averaging 5.9 points, 4.9 rebounds and 1.6 assists in just over 18 minutes per night. He ended up starting at center for the Thunder down the stretch and fit in well with the young group.

Having big game, starting experience on the bench is huge for this Thunder team and critical for the front court depth. He's also demonstrated the ability to play alongside Holmgren as he did the entire Summer League session. Allowing Holmgren to roam freely and block shots from the weakside will equal plus-opportunities for the Thunder.

Williams' return benefits Holmgren and the entire team, especially when Gilgeous-Alexander is sidelined. Any depth is good depth, and the Thunder will need the big man from Arkansas moving forward.
