The NBA’s long-anticipated expansion plans could reshape the league’s conference structure, with the Minnesota Timberwolves or Memphis Grizzlies potentially moving to the Eastern Conference.
According to ESPN, the league is set to hold an initial vote next week on adding expansion franchises in Seattle and Las Vegas.
The proposal, reported by Shams Charania, would take the NBA from 30 to 32 teams and mark the first expansion since the Charlotte Bobcats, now named Charlotte Hornets, joined the league in 2004.
If the plan is approved, the NBA would need to rebalance its conferences.
With both proposed expansion teams located in the Western United States, league officials are reportedly considering shifting either Minnesota or Memphis to the Eastern Conference.
It is unclear whether this decision will be tied exclusively to geographical factors.
For instance, in the current landscape, many fans believe moving the Timberwolves to the Eastern Conference would benefit the competition within the league.
The broader expansion discussion is based on Seattle and Las Vegas’ commercial potential. For years, the league has viewed the two markets as strong candidates for the expansion due to arena infrastructure, fan interest and other aspects.
Reaction on social media suggests many NBA fans strongly support the potential expansion.
“Returning to Seattle and adding Las Vegas are no brainer decisions,” one user wrote on X.

Another fan highlighted the emotional significance of a potential Seattle SuperSonics return. “I grew up a Sonics fan, and have been rooting for OKC since their move. If Seattle gets their team back today, some justice has been restored to the world.”
Others focused on the league’s growing depth of talent. “Great decision. Too much talent on the bench in this league,” one supporter posted.
Another reaction summed up the excitement surrounding the proposal: “This is BIG news. Seattle or Vegas or both on the clock!”
