Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum have played 260 playoff games combined. Tuesday night, they couldn't handle a 20-year-old rookie playing his second postseason game.
No. 3 pick VJ Edgecombe scored 30 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as the Philadelphia 76ers evened their first-round series with the Boston Celtics with a 111-97 victory. He became the youngest player to ever put up 30 and 10 in an NBA playoff game.
The Sixers' relentless duo of young guards were huge against Brown and Tatum, especially impressive against All-Defensive guard Derrick White. Edgecombe shot 12-of-20 for the game, going 6-of-10 on threes. Maxey put up 29 points and delivered nine assists, shooting 5-of-12 on threes. The 11 combined triples nearly matched the Celtics' entire team, who went 13-of-50 from behind the arc.
Brown and Tatum were no slouches, with Brown scoring 36 points and making five threes. Tatum finished with 19 points, 14 rebounds and nine assists, though his outside shot wasn't falling (2-of-8). However, the pair and their Celtics teammates seemed a step slow against Edgecombe and Maxey all night, whether it was rotating on drives to closing out on threes, where Edgecombe was left far too open.

Edgecombe didn't seem at all intimidated playing against the 2024 NBA champions in only his second playoff game. He only played two NCAA Tournament games in his lone season at Baylor, but Edgecombe did get invaluable international experience playing for the Bahamas in the FIBA AmeriCup last August.
Another important number the Maxey-Edgecombe duo produced? Three, the number of turnovers they had together. The Sixers had only nine for the entire game to the Celtics' 13, and scored five more points off turnovers.
But the guards' shooting is what won the game. Boston's offense relies on high three-point volume (42.1 per game) and strong offensive rebounding. While they did corral 18 of their own misses Tuesday, missing 37 three-pointers was too much to overcome.
Meanwhile, Maxey sparked the Sixers' game-sealing 10-0 run with a pair of fourth-quarter three-pointers. When Brown stopped the run with a three-pointer of his own, Edgecombe answered with his final three of the game.

The Sixers remain big underdogs in the series, but Edgecombe and Maxey certainly aren't playing like it.
