For the first time since the blockbuster deal that sent Anthony Davis and Max Christie to the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for Luka Dončić, Lakers owner Jeanie Buss opened up about the emotional side of the trade.
Speaking on SiriusXM NBA Radio on April 17, Buss admitted she hasn’t had the chance to properly say goodbye to Anthony Davis—at least, not yet.
“I haven’t seen him face-to-face, and I look forward to in the offseason,” Buss said. “But you have to remember, he’s now under contract to another team. We’ve had too many instances of people accusing us of tampering, so I have to be really careful with stuff like that.”
Anthony Davis, who helped power the Lakers to the 2020 NBA championship inside the bubble, was long seen as LeBron’s eventual successor in L.A. But the surprise trade reshuffled the deck, landing the Lakers one of the league’s most electrifying stars in Dončić.
While Davis was sidelined most of the season with an abdominal injury, Dončić has helped lead the Lakers to a third seed finish and a return to playoff relevance. For now, it looks like the Lakers are winning the trade.
Despite a rough start in Dallas, Anthony Davis is keeping things in perspective.
Following a season cut short by injury—playing just nine games for the Mavs—Davis reflected on his new chapter with humility and gratitude.
“I’m just very appreciative I get to play the game of basketball. Appreciative to Dallas & the fanbase and my teammates for accepting me & welcoming me with open arms,” Anthony Davis told the Dallas Morning News.
“You can’t control what goes on… I tried to do everything I could to get back on the floor and carry us into the playoffs. I’m just appreciative.”
Anthony Davis returned late in the season to push the Mavericks into the Play-In, but they fell short in their second game, losing to the Memphis Grizzlies 120-106.
He finishes his shortened Dallas debut with averages of 20.0 points, 10.1 rebounds, and 4.4 assists—solid numbers for a rocky start.
