When Jack McCloskey selected Dennis Rodman with the 27th overall pick of the 1986 NBA Draft, the Detroit Pistons players had no idea who the Southeastern Oklahoma State star was. Well, Pistons guard Joe Dumars somewhat knew Dennis.
Dumars played college basketball at McNeese State University from 1981 to 1985 before joining the Pistons as the 18th overall pick of the 1985 NBA Draft. The Lake Charles, Louisiana, school is a five-hour drive away from Louisiana Tech in Ruston, where Debra Rodman starred.
"I knew him as Debra Rodman's little brother. I knew her from way back in college, and I knew that was her little brother," Joe said. "So that's how I knew Dennis Rodman – Debra's little brother."
The 6'3" Debra played four years at Louisiana Tech from 1980 to 1984. During that span, she was a four-year letter winner who helped the Lady Techsters post a 130-6 record. Louisiana Tech made four Finals Four appearances and won back-to-back national titles in 1981 and 1982.
In the 1982 title game, Rodman's defense sparked a run that turned an early 16-8 deficit into a 24-22 lead, which Louisiana Tech never relinquished. They ended up winning the inaugural NCAA women's basketball title 76-62, with Debra scoring 14 points and grabbing a team-high 11 rebounds in just 24 minutes of action.
"The Worm's" sister finished her collegiate career with 1,306 points and 1,200 rebounds while shooting 54% from the field. She left Louisiana Tech as the 28th all-time leading scorer and the No.2 all-time leading rebounder for the Lady Techsters.
Like Debra, little brother Dennis was known for his rebounding in the NBA. "The Worm" led the NBA in boards from 1992 to 1998. He averaged double-digit rebounds in ten out of his 14 seasons played and posted a career average of 13.4 boards per game.
However, according to former NBA star Larry Johnson, who was the Rodmans' neighbor in Dallas, Debra was the best rebounder in the family.
"She look like him, she built like him," said LJ. "Her name is Debra Rodman, she was a mother fu**** when she was at Louisiana Tech. I think they beat Cheryl Miller. She was a beast. That was the best rebounder in the family, Debra Rodman."
While Debra may have been the best rebounding Rodman, Dennis quickly erased the label of "Debra's little brother" with his tough defense and crazy hustle plays. Like his sister, "The Worm" also helped his squad, the Pistons, win back-to-back titles in 1989 and 1990.
