There’s no denying that Victor Wembanyama of the San Antonio Spurs is one of the best defenders in the NBA. Given his 8-foot wingspan, he can reject almost any shot attempt. In his first two seasons, Wemby has led the league in blocks per game, showing how great of a defender he is at a young age. However, not everyone is easy to impress.

On Wednesday, former NBA player Kendrick Perkins gave his picks for the five best defensive players. Given the defensive prowess that Wemby has shown, many expect him to be named as the top choice for Perk. However, he was snubbed as the top choice and only finished at No. 4 on his list.

Wemby possesses an incredible defensive talent, especially in the shot-blocking department. He’s averaged 3.7 blocks in the past two seasons. In his rookie year, he was the runner-up for the Defensive Player of the Year award after Rudy Gobert was voted the winner.

Last season, he was the top candidate to win the DPOY. However, it was discovered that he had blood clots in his right shoulder, forcing the San Antonio Spurs to shut him down. Evan Mobley was awarded the defensive award of the 2024-25 season.

“I know the man is the best shot-blocker in the game, but I haven’t seen him play since February,” Perk said. “I also haven’t seen him play when the lights are the brightest. Meaning, I need to see him when it matters the most, come postseason time.

“I know in the future he will win a few Defensive Player of the Year awards. But as of right now, he’s number four on my list. That doesn’t mean he can’t go up.”

Perk’s top choice as the best defender in the NBA is Alex Caruso of the Oklahoma City Thunder.

There’s a lot to like about Wembanyama’s potential as a player. Even his peers believe that the San Antonio Spurs star can be one of the best players in the league at some point. Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo thinks that the Frenchman can be mentioned in the same breath as Stephen Curry, LeBron James and Michael Jordan.

“I think he’s going to be one of the best players in the league in the next couple years. I think he’ll have a very great career moving forward,” Giannis said. “So maybe, like, a jersey, his first jersey, or his first basketball shoe when he played in his first NBA game. Or the first ball that he played with, when he scored his first point.

“You’ve got to go with Wemby, Steph[en Curry], LeBron [James], MJ [Michael Jordan]. Those are great investments.”

Many believe that Wemby is on the right track, given how his first two years have panned out.
