In an era of elite wings, it's the point guards stealing the headlines

The early 2000s are widely viewed as the golden generation of the point guard. Multiple future Hall of Famers were drafted during this era, including Chris Paul, Stephen Curry, Kyrie Irving and Rajon Rondo.

For over a decade, elite point guard play dominated the NBA. Teams with the best guard pairings often had a significant amount of success, especially if combined with an elite big man. However, as the league evolved, we found ourselves watching an influx of high-level forwards, capable of initiating the offense like a guard while dominating with two-way play.

We're still firmly in that era. However, the 2025 postseason is providing somewhat of a throwback. Tyrese Haliburton, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Jalen Brunson are all spearheading potential contenders. Furthermore, they're all enjoying dominant stretches of basketball.

Heading into the conference finals, the Indiana Pacers, New York Knicks and Oklahoma City Thunder have all booked their spots. An elite guard spearheads each of those teams. In fact, the Minnesota Timberwolves are the only remaining roster that an exceptionally talented point guard doesn't lead. However, you can make the argument for Anthony Edwards to be considered in that conversation.

Therefore, there is a 75% chance the 2025 NBA champion will be anchored by a breathtakingly good ball-handler. Which, in itself, is somewhat of a throwback to the early 2000s era of basketball, where AND1 mixtapes and streetball had a significant impact on the league.

So, despite the golden generation of guards now being on their final tours in the NBA, it would appear there are at least a few new names willing to carry their torch.

The NBA is no longer a wing's league, nor does it belong to the bigs. Instead, there's elite talent at every position. It just so happens that this year, we're back to celebrating some sensational point guards.
