Insider Hints Mavericks' Draft Decision is Out of GM Nico Harrison's Hands

Nico Harrison has been public enemy No. 1 since the Dallas Mavericks shockingly traded Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers prior to the NBA trade deadline this year.

After Doncic went on to continue playing like a generational superstar and the Mavericks missed the playoffs, fans took the heat on Harrison to the next level. Even at home games, he was hearing constant "Fire Nico" chants.

On Monday night, Dallas received a huge gift. In the NBA draft lottery, the Mavericks won the No. 1 overall pick despite only having a 1.8% chance to land the selection. With that lottery win, the team now has the opportunity to draft Cooper Flagg.

While there has been some speculation about Harrison trading the top pick for a veteran player like Giannis Antetokounmpo, it doesn't seem that he'll be given the opportunity to do so. Dallas has taken the decision out of his hands.

As shared by MFFL NATION on X, the governor of the team, Patrick Dumont, has already decided that he wants Flagg on the Mavericks, according to insider Tim MacMahon.

“Patrick Dumont, the governor of the Dallas Mavericks, recognizes the gift horse that was delivered to this franchise," MacMahon said. "The Dallas Mavericks will be picking Cooper Flagg with the No. 1 overall pick.”.

Flagg has been viewed as the likely No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NBA draft for quite some time. Even before his freshman year at Duke, he was being hyped up as the likely candidate.

Throughout the course of the 2024-25 season with the Blue Devils, Flagg lived up to all of the hype. He led the team to the Final Four, averaging 19.2 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 1.4 blocks, and 1.4 steals per game. He shot 48.1% from the floor and 38.5% from 3-point distance.

Bringing him in to form a "big three" with Kyrie Irving and Anthony Davis could put Dallas back on the map in the Western Conference.

The 2025 NBA draft will occur on Wednesday, June 25 at 8 p.m. ET.
