The Dallas Mavericks lucked out this offseason after missing the playoffs this past season, with the landing of the No. 1 overall pick, Duke standout Cooper Flagg. In case you forgot, Dallas was eliminated in the NBA’s Play-In Tournament in a 120-106 loss to the Memphis Grizzlies. With the loss, Dallas became the 11th team in NBA history to miss the playoffs after an NBA Finals appearance.

But is Flagg really the best fit for the Mavericks? Yahoo Sports’ Kevin O’Connor doesn’t think so. O’Connor’s statement on his show, “The Kevin O’Connor Show,” in recent days. Here is more information so you can develop an informed opinion.

Is Cooper Flagg the Best Fit For the Dallas Mavericks?

Flagg is one of the most popular NBA rookies. Flagg was widely predicted to become the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. The Maine native played his lone season at Duke from 2024-25 as a forward, setting a new, all-time ACC freshman record with 42 points vs. Notre Dame on January 11, 2025.

Flagg, 18, is widely predicted to save the Dallas Mavericks. However, O’ Connor recently expressed his doubts about Flagg’s presence in Dallas in his eponymous show.

“When Cooper Flagg was drafted to Dallas, my first instinct was like, ‘Wow, this sucks for him,'” O’Connor said. “He’s going into a team that their fans have left the franchise, that they feel betrayed after trading Luka, the immense expectations for you in a situation that is trying to win, but I don’t think that’s realistic.

“I think it’s going to get really frustrating for the Dallas Mavericks fans this year, and for Cooper, I wish he were on a team where they had a clear identity. This team does not. And that’s just disappointing to me. For a guy who is an unbelievable young player and unbelievable prospect.”

O’Connor’s doubts are valid. The Mavericks arguably have no identity right now. Fans should be patient with Flagg. Flagg’s presence may not lead to an early breakout due to the Mavericks’ veteran-heavy roster with Anthony Davis, Klay Thompson, and Kyrie Irving.

Final Thoughts

The Dallas Mavericks lucked into a generational talent in Flagg. However, Flagg might take a while to learn the ropes and develop on a bad team with less pressure, like other rookies, including No. 1 overall picks, in their first few seasons in the NBA.

The expectation is that Flagg will rise to the occasion, which is certainly possible. However, Dallas likely won’t be able to commit to developing the 18-year-old and compete for an NBA Finals spot at the same time — unless Dallas’ winning mentality remains on the rise.
