The Los Angeles Lakers were the top choice of Deandre Ayton after his contract was bought out by the Portland Trail Blazers. On Wednesday, it became official that the Lakers agreed to sign Ayton to a two-year, $16.6 million contract. Securing a starting center was at the top of the team’s priority list heading into the 2025 NBA free agency.

Although he isn’t a star player, Ayton is a decent starting big man. Throughout his seven-year career, he’s been the top center for the teams he’s played for. With the Phoenix Suns, he showed promise as the No. 1 pick in 2018. In the five years in Phoenix, he averaged 16.7 points, 10.4 rebounds and 1.6 assists, to help the franchise return to the NBA playoffs.

With the Blazers, he didn’t have much success and often dealt with injuries. However, he was still the first option when talking about Portland’s center rotation. In the two seasons he was part of the franchise, he averaged 15.7 points, 10.7 rebounds and 1.6 assists.

The acquisition of Ayton solved the biggest concern for the Los Angeles Lakers. However, not everyone has been impressed with who the team added to play next to Luka Doncic and LeBron James. Longtime sports broadcaster Colin Cowherd said that having the former Arizona star isn’t the best fit for L.A.

“The Lakers are literally trapped,” Cowherd said. “So they sign Deandre Ayton. [The] Blazers bought him out. It didn’t work in Portland, it did not work in Phoenix. It’s not a great fit, it’ll last a year or two. But I think they had to do something.”

His guest on his show, “The Colin Cowherd Podcast,” Danny Parkins, tried to soften the criticism about Ayton. He believes the big man will excel as a third option next to Doncic and James.

“Not needing to be the focal point of the offense, might bring out a best version of Deandre Ayton.”

Bringing in Ayton was an important move for the Los Angeles Lakers. The team still has the Big 3 of Doncic, James and Austin Reaves. Having him in the frontcourt adds another scoring option, which is what the former Lakers guard Patrick Beverley thinks. Pat Bev commented on the signing, calling it a good move since L.A. now has a great fourth option.

“Ayton to Lakers is so tough. good 4th option @PatBevPod” Beverley said.

It’s still clear that the offense will revolve around the star trio of Doncic, James and Reaves. But they’ll get a big man who is capable of giving the Lakers at least 15 points a night.
