Jacque Vaughn in lead for Nets head coaching job?

Jacque Vaughn may have the inside track to becoming the Brooklyn Nets’ full-time head coach.

In a roundtable feature for The Athletic this week, Nets beat writer Alex Schiffer reported that some internally in the organization are rooting for Vaughn, who is currently the team’s interim coach, to get the job.

The 45-year-old Vaughn ascended to the interim position in March when Kenny Atkinson was let go but only got two games in charge before the NBA season was suspended. He previously coached the Orlando Magic for three seasons from 2012 to 2015 but went a crummy 58-158 (.269) over that span.

While candidates like Jason Kidd and Jeff Van Gundy have also been linked to the job (among other notable names), other writers in the roundtable piece question the fit and note that big-name hires often don’t translate to success. Vaughn is a young, internal option who has been a top assistant on the team for the last four seasons, so it wouldn’t be hard to see him get the job if the Nets like what they have in him.
