Jaden McDaniels Breaks Silence on Incident Involving Nikola Jokic

The NBA playoffs got heated on April 26, as a brawl broke out involving Nikola Jokic and Jaden McDaniels. But when McDaniels finally opened up about this situation, it became clear that this was more than just a late-game scuffle.

In the playoff Game 4 between the Denver Nuggets and Minnesota Timberwolves, McDaniel scored a late layup before the outcome of the game was decided. That move triggered an extreme reaction from Jokic, who rushed at McDaniels and started an altercation that led to 2 ejections and league scrutiny.

In a post-game interview, McDaniels said, “I don’t know what he said, to be honest, I just saw someone else who was big as hell.” When asked about scoring a late layup, he answered, “Clock’s still be running, so I’m going to score.”

When he was asked, “Is this what you normally do?“ He answered, “I don’t know, I mean, the game’s still on the clock. I just come to hoop every night, that’s all that matters, and just try my best.”

Quite clearly, McDaniels viewed the moment as part of the game rather than just an act of disrespect, even if opponents interpreted it differently.

According to reports and postgame comments, Jokic believes that McDaniels broke an “unwritten rule” by scoring when “everybody stopped playing.” This point of view of Jokic highlights a traditional code in basketball, one that prioritizes sportsmanship when the result is already decided.

The clash was not isolated. It came amid an already fiery series when McDaniels had previously taken verbal shots at Denver’s defense, adding fuel to an increasingly personal rivalry. The late-game layup simply brought that tension to a boiling point.

However, the Timberwolves are leading the series 3-1 and had their previous win 112-108 against the Nuggets. Nikola Jokic and Julius Randle were ejected for their behaviour on the court.

Timberwolves and Nuggets Rivalry Gets Intense Following Jaden McDaniels’ Last Game Layup

Following some verbal exchanges since the start of the playoffs, the teams have developed an intense rivalry as they have met in the NBA playoffs three times in the last four years. McDaniels’ actions just escalated this rivalry.

A late-game layup by McDaniels created chaos as the Timberwolves took control against the Nuggets in Game 4. With the result already decided, McDaniels took a layup in the final seconds, leading to immediate frustration from Nikola Jokic.

The moment quickly turned into a physical brawl, drawing in multiple players and forcing the referees and officials to step in. It resulted in ejections for Jokic and Timberwolves’ forward Julius Randle, underlining how eruptive the closing seconds had become.

McDaniels stated during Game 2 that Denver’s team was full of “bad defenders,” who later said he didn’t know what Jokic said to him during their confrontation. The rivalry keeps exceeding as Timberwolves’ Anthony Edwards and coaches expressed strong dislike for the opponents.

Game 5 of Nuggets vs Timberwolves is on Monday, 27 April, 9:30 pm.
