James Dolan, executive chairman and CEO of MSG Sports, is “handing over the day-to-day ownership responsibilities for the Blueshirts to his son Quentin,” reports Mollie Walker of the New York Post. According to Walker, Dolan will now assume the titles of Rangers president, chief operating officer and alternate governor.
As a result, Rangers GM Chris Drury will now report to a Quentin Dolan, though the move is not expected to impact any of the former Rangers captain’s day-to-day responsibilities when it comes to hockey operations.
Dolan, 32, has served as special advisor to the executive chairman at MSG Sports since February. Before then, Dolan served in various roles within the company since 2015.
In the Rangers’ official announcement of the move, Dolan said:
I’ve always had a tremendous respect and admiration for the New York Rangers organization, it’s been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I’m honored to have this opportunity to ensure our hockey operations staff, coaches, and players have all the support they need to provide our fans a product they can be proud of. I’m looking forward to immediately getting to work with Chris Drury, Mike Sullivan, and the entire staff.
There is also a statement from James Dolan within the announcement, and it reads:
Since his arrival overseeing our Player Performance and Science department, Quentin has made a strong impact on the Rangers and Knicks organizations, and we are pleased that he will step into this elevated position. Quentin has quickly become an incredibly valued member of the Rangers franchise and played a key role behind the scenes with the Knicks during their championship run this past season. I look forward to seeing the positive influence he can make in this expanded and critical role.
This promotion and change with the Rangers does not extend to the Knicks. The reigning NBA champions are “status quo,” according to Walker.
Dolan was with the Rangers on the first day of free agency and has been around the team at its development camp. Chief among Dolan’s responsibilities overseeing the team will be helping the club steer itself back to contention after two consecutive campaigns finished outside the postseason.
Drury has been extremely aggressive this summer, trading first-round draft choices for players such as Pavel Dorofeyev and Marcus Pettersson, as well as completing UFA signings of names such as Oliver Bjorkstrand and Joe Veleno. The team has also traded away key names such as Vincent Trocheck and Will Borgen as part of a broader reorganization of the roster.
While it’s unclear what kind of expectations Dolan has for Drury moving forward, it is clear that the Rangers intend on ending their playoff drought at two seasons next spring.
