James Harden reportedly was 'driving force' behind Doc Rivers' firing

Following another second-round exit for the Philadelphia 76ers, president Daryl Morey said he decided to fire head coach Doc Rivers. However, according to Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports, those close to Rivers believe James Harden had a hand in the move.

"Several members of Rivers' staff, sources said, have pointed to All-Star point guard James Harden as a driving force behind Rivers' departure," Fischer wrote.

Morey revealed that star Joel Embiid was shocked by Rivers' firing, hinting that the team didn't consult the MVP beforehand. If the Sixers chose to leave Embiid out while letting Harden dictate the move, it could be a sign of things to come in Philly.

After the Sixers parted ways with Rivers, ESPN's Kendrick Perkins urged Embiid to find a way out of the City of Brotherly Love, adding that Harden's voice had surpassed his and he may no longer be a priority for the team.

Harden is expected to decline his player option for 2023-24 and is seeking a four-year deal on a "competitive roster." Morey said Wednesday that bringing Harden back on a long-term contract was "Scenario A" for the Sixers, so it looks like the team envisions a future with the All-Star.

If Harden has pull within the organization now, perhaps it will come to light by whoever the 76ers tap to replace Rivers.

Per Fischer, the 76ers have a short list of candidates, including one interesting name with a Harden tie-in. Along with Sixers assistant Sam Cassell, the team is interested in interviewing Mike Budenholzer, Monty Williams, Frank Vogel, Nick Nurse and Harden's former boss with the Houston Rockets, Mike D'Antoni.
