Jason Kidd has not liked what he has seen from Klay Thompson this season, and wants him to do one thing.
The Dallas Mavericks managed to get their second win of the season against the undermanned Indiana Pacers, going 2-3 to start the season.
There was a scary moment in the game, where Anthony Davis sustained an injury and had to leave the game early. Luckily, Brandon Williams’ 20 points off the bench were enough to seal the win.
One player who was disappointing yet again was Klay Thompson. The former NBA champion shot just 2-10 from the field, 1-6 from deep, and scored just 5 points.
Thompson has admitted his poor form is embarrassing, as he isn’t able to do what the Dallas Mavericks need him to. But Jason Kidd wants him to continue doing what he is doing.
Jason Kidd spoke to reporters after the Dallas Mavericks’ win over the Indiana Pacers. When talking about Klay Thompson’s struggles to start the season, Kidd seemed unfazed.
Rather than limit his attempts, Kidd wants Thompson to continue taking the shots he has, as he is getting good looks, and the shots will eventually start to go in.
“He’s gotta keep shooting. He’s a shooter. He’s been in this league for a long time. So, for him, he needs to continue to take those looks. He’s getting great looks, they’re just not going down for him right now.”
Jason Kidd’s message to Klay Thompson during a slow start to the season shooting the ball:

While there is some prudence to Kidd’s advice, maybe he is being a little too confident in Thompson right now.
Even though Kidd won’t ask Thompson to guard the opposition’s best players on a nightly basis, asking him to shoot his way out of this slump might be a lot.
Klay Thompson is undoubtedly one of the best shooters in NBA history. But in recent years, his slumps have often dragged his teams down. To encourage him to shoot through it isn’t exactly the best idea.
To start the season, Klay Thompson is averaging 8.2 points, 3.0 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game, while shooting 31.3% from the field and 25.9% from deep.
Klay’s best game of the season so far came against the Toronto Raptors, where he scored 10 points while going 4-7 from the field and 2-4 from deep.
But that is the only game this season where Klay Thompson has shot above 40% from the field, and 35% from beyond the arc.
For the Mavericks to turn their fortunes around and start winning games, Klay Thompson’s shooting has to improve.
