The Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum era in Boston is over. After weeks of trade rumors and rumblings, the former was finally dealt by the Celtics—just not where or for what anybody expected.
ESPN insider Shams Charania broke the news early Wednesday evening on X (formerly Twitter) that Boston was sending Brown to the Atlantic Division rival Philadelphia 76ers in exchange for Paul George, two first-round draft picks, and two second-round draft picks.
“BLOCKBUSTER: The Boston Celtics have agreed to trade Jaylen Brown to the Philadelphia 76ers for Paul George, two first-round picks and two second-round picks, sources tell ESPN,”
The 29-year-old Brown has three years remaining on the five-year, $304 million supermax extension he signed with the Celtics in 2023. He averaged a career-high 28.7 points per game to go along with 6.9 rebounds and 5.1 assists in 71 appearances this past season.
Meanwhile, George, 36, has two years remaining on the four-year, $212 million contract he signed with the 76ers as a free agent in 2024. He averaged 17.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 3.6 assists per game in just 37 appearances last season.
It’s a shocking development and turn of events for Boston, having gone from nearly acquiring two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo for Brown and draft picks to instead trading Brown for George and picks.
They will now build around a duo of Tatum and George, with Derrick White, Payton Pritchard, and free-agent signing Mitchell Robinson serving as key supporting pieces.
Philadelphia, on the other hand, gets out of what many viewed as George’s nearly untradeable contract and lands arguably the Celtics’ best player in the prime of his career. Brown, Tyrese Maxey, VJ Edgecombe, and a healthy Joel Embiid now stack up with anyone in what has become a loaded Eastern Conference in recent weeks.
