Jaylen Brown's father, Marselles Brown, was arrested in Las Vegas on Wednesday after allegedly stabbing a youth football coach in a dispute over a parking spot.
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police said officers responded to a call about a stabbing around 5:42 p.m. at All American Park, where there was an injured man who had been stabbed multiple times.
Police said there was a verbal discussion related to a parking spot that turned physical. Police said the suspect drove off. Officers located the suspect a short time later, and based on the suspect's car information, officers arrested the suspect.
The victim, a youth football coach, was taken to a local hospital, where he had surgery. He was listed in critical condition, and police have not provided any other public updates on his condition.
Marselles Brown, 57, is being held in the Clark County Detention Center on suspicion of attempted murder. He is scheduled for a court appearance on Thursday afternoon.
Sources told TMZ Sports that Jaylen Brown and his father have no relationship and that Jaylen Brown had no knowledge of the arrest or stabbing incident until it was publicized. It should also be noted that Jaylen Brown is in the middle of what could be the best stretch of his career.
A previously heavyweight fighter, Marselles turned professional in 1989 and recorded a record of 33-18-1, with 25 knockouts. His previous professional fight was nearly ten years ago. Marselles largely avoided news and publicity in the years following his fighting career.
The shocking news puts Jaylen in an uncomfortable spotlight right now. Brown is coming off a title in 2024 with the Boston Celtics and is one of the best players in the NBA. Neither Jaylen Brown nor the Celtics organization has issued a statement at this time.
Marselles Brown's arrest adds to Jaylen's story.
For Jaylen, who has focused on nothing but his craft and community both before and throughout his pro career, it's unclear whether Brown's situation will have any bearing on Jaylen's standing with the Celtics and the NBA, though it is a heavy headline to navigate as they begin a new season.
As of now, police continue to say that the investigation is active. It is expected that more information regarding the incident and the condition of the victim will be released following Marselles Brown's initial court appearance.
