What was supposed to be a marquee NBA matchup between two contenders quickly turned into controversy Tuesday night in San Antonio.
Jaylen Brown was ejected in the second quarter during the Boston Celtics’ 125–116 loss to the San Antonio Spurs after receiving two technical fouls during a heated argument with officials.
The moment completely shifted the momentum of the game — and sparked a debate around the league about NBA officiating.

The incident started with 3:38 remaining in the first half when Brown lost the ball along the sideline while being closely defended by Spurs rookie Stephon Castle. Brown believed he had been pushed out of bounds, but officials ruled it a turnover instead of a foul.
Brown immediately turned toward referee Tyler Ford to protest the call.
The argument escalated quickly.
Officials gave Brown his first technical foul for aggressively pointing and using profanity while arguing the call.
But Brown didn’t stop.
He continued confronting the referees as play resumed, which led to a second technical foul moments later from another official, automatically ejecting him from the game.
Teammates and staff had to step in to restrain the frustrated Celtics star as he left the floor.
Brown’s night ended early after just 14 minutes of action, finishing with:
Before the ejection, Boston was actually leading by two points, making the moment even more significant for the outcome of the game.
Without Brown on the floor, the Celtics struggled to maintain control as the Spurs slowly took over.
Once Brown was gone, the game belonged to Victor Wembanyama.
The Spurs superstar delivered a massive performance with 39 points and 11 rebounds, leading San Antonio to a 125–116 victory.
Wembanyama hit eight three-pointers and sparked a key 12-0 run in the fourth quarter that put the game out of reach.
Boston still got strong performances from:
But without Brown, the Celtics simply couldn’t keep up with San Antonio’s momentum.
The drama didn’t end when Brown walked off the court.
Shortly after the ejection, Brown took to social media to vent his frustration with officiating, writing:
“This the s— I be talking about.”
It wasn’t the first time Brown has criticized referees this season either. Earlier in the year, he was fined $35,000 for comments about officiating after another Spurs game.
The incident is now likely to bring more scrutiny from the league, and potentially another fine.
What makes the ejection even more frustrating for fans is that the game featured two of the NBA’s most exciting teams.
Boston entered the night as one of the top contenders in the Eastern Conference, while the young Spurs — led by Wembanyama — are quickly becoming one of the league’s most dangerous rising teams.
Instead of a full matchup between stars, the night became dominated by one controversial moment with the referees.
And now the NBA world is left asking the same question:
Did the officials throw out one of the league’s biggest stars way too early?
