Jaylin Williams‘ season with OKC seems to have more hype as he seeks to elevate his role in their title defense campaign. The 2025-26 season requires all hands on deck for the Thunder, and Williams is no exception to that. Now more than ever, he seems dedicated to being a part of Oklahoma City’s lore.

After signing a big extension with the Thunder in the offseason, things are looking up for Williams. After all, the 23-year-old forward/center is starting to cement his place as the heart and soul of the team. While he’s not one of their biggest guns, he certainly has his own impact in the game.

As the season is coming in hot, there are expectations for J-Will’s growth and improvement in the game. Sure, the Thunder may be a stacked team, but Williams has his own part in that success. Now he has to ensure that he can still be a spark plug for the squad.

J-Will’s Historic Feats Before the Season

To start the month of October, it seems that J-Will has already found his way into history books. Williams is the last player to wear the No. 6 jersey, retired by the NBA in honor of Bill Russell, who passed away back in 2022. While it’s already a retired jersey, the league allowed those who are currently wearing the said number to keep it.

To add to that historic feat, Williams has now purchased a new house in Oklahoma City, a direct result of his three-year, $24 million extension with the team. Now he’s got a home to celebrate family gatherings during the holidays since he joined the Thunder in 2022.

“It’s big enough now to where my family is going to come celebrate Christmas with me and Thanksgiving with me,” Williams said. “I’m super thankful that Sam Presti, Mark Daigneault and the whole Thunder organization believes in me.”

Fortifying His Role with the Thunder

It’s worth noting that J-Will has served as a promising glue guy off the bench for OKC. Throughout his time with OKC, he’s proven to be the best backup big man they have so far. Chet Holmgren and Isaiah Hartenstein start at the same time, and it’s J-Will running with the second unit. He’s also crucial to the team chemistry, which makes him a more valuable piece—like Mr. Thunder Nick Collison back in the day.

“Everything is a blessing,” Williams said. “Every time I step on the court. Anytime I do anything, I’m blessed to be there. If I’m sitting on the bench, watching those guys go out there and kill whoever they’re playing against, I’m blessed to be there.”

So far, Williams has upped his production with OKC and has shown promise in his games. J-Will has logged a total of three triple-doubles in the previous season. That’s a promising note considering those were the games where he filled in for the Thunder bigs. On top of that, he played the least number of games last season due to injuries, and yet it was his most productive of his career.

Heading for a Bigger Season

Williams’ place in the Thunder rotation is a secure one. He provides amazing playmaking and floor spacing with his shooting. On top of that, we’ve seen how his length and size come in handy for Oklahoma City. Perhaps the best example of that was his defense on Nikola Jokic in the West Semis—something that’s hard to forget.

The Thunder forward averaged 5.9 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 2.6 assists, and 0.6 blocks on 43.9% shooting. Those numbers are all career-highs, which shows a lot about how expectations are now piling up before him. That kind of solid production off the bench is invaluable to OKC, and he’s still young.

At this point, Jaylin Williams is due for a huge season with Oklahoma City. He won’t be worrying about Thomas Sorber taking over his minutes as the latter is out for the 2025-26 run. Branden Carlson will still have to go a long way to prove his worth. All things considered, this is going to be a huge prove-it year for J-Will.
