Jeanie Buss, Lakers Update Emerges After News on Wednesday

Jeanie Buss has held one of the NBA’s most high-profile positions since inheriting control of the Los Angeles Lakers from her father, Jerry Buss. She became the first woman to serve as governor of an NBA franchise and has been responsible for guiding one of the league’s most storied teams through periods of both triumph and turbulence.

Under her watch, the Lakers returned to glory with a 2020 championship and remained a financial powerhouse. At the same time, Buss’ leadership has been scrutinized by some Lakers fans. She has faced criticism for front-office instability, organizational missteps, and missed opportunities in free agency.

This past summer, the Lakers made headlines when the Buss family agreed to sell majority control of the franchise to Mark Walter, owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers and head of TWG Global. The sale carried a $10 billion valuation, marking the most expensive for a sports franchise in North American sports history.

While the family trust retained a minority stake, speculation swirled that Jeanie Buss might step aside. However, it was confirmed she will remain the Lakers’ primary governor for “at least a number of years,” according to ESPN’s Shams Charania and Ramona Shelbourne.

On Tuesday, the Buss family made the headlines again, this time for a venture separate from the Lakers. Per ESPN’s Dave McMenamin and Shams Charania, Jeanie’s brothers, Joey and Jesse Buss, have announced the launch of Buss Sports Capital, a global firm focused on sports investments, acquisitions, and partnerships.

Despite the big news from the Buss family, ESPN confirmed that both brothers are expected to remain on the Lakers, with Jeanie retaining her role as the franchise’s governor:

“Both brothers will remain with the Lakers after the sale is finalized, with their older sister, Jeanie Buss, continuing to serve as the primary team governor for the foreseeable future.”

The Buss family’s ownership of the Lakers dates back to 1979 when Jerry Buss purchased the team, setting the foundation for a storied franchise that captured multiple championships and global relevance. Today, Jeanie leads a roster that features Luka Doncic and LeBron James, two of the NBA’s biggest stars. She will hope to continue in the footsteps of her father by delivering more championships in a new ownership era while maintaining the Lakers’ status as one of the league’s premier brands.

The Lakers will have another opportunity to compete for an NBA title when the regular season resumes next month, with LA beginning its campaign at home against the Golden State Warriors on Oct. 21.
