Jeanie Buss may have hinted at LeBron James' retirement

For months, NBA fans and analysts have speculated whether this is the end of the line for LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers.

The Lakers are building around Luka Doncic, and they'll likely have to save big bucks to keep Austin Reaves in town for the long run. And since James didn't get a contract extension, he'll be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.

Discussing that possibility in an interview on SiriusXM NBA Radio, former Lakers majority owner Jeanie Buss left the door open for a return, but she also knows this might be it for him.

Jeanie Buss wants LeBron James to retire as a Laker

"Well, I’ve always said I want to see him retire as a Laker. But he’s going to be a free agent. It’s really his decision to make. He is a valuable player in this league, even in his 23rd season. It’s incredible what he’s done," Buss said. "But, you know, the decision’s going to be his, he’s a free agent, and I’m sure he’s going to look at all his opportunities. Or not. Maybe he just wants to go out quietly."

James has been there and done that. There's nothing left to prove or accomplish for him at this point in his career, so this could be a fitting end for him. That said, not having a farewell tour as one of the greatest players of all time might be odd, especially for someone who has always taken great pride in celebrating his accolades.

James should have multiple suitors in free agency if he decides to run it back for another season, but not many places to make top dollar. As such, staying with the Lakers for at least another year might make the most sense.

Then again, we're talking about someone who's made over $580 million in NBA salary and whose net worth reached $1 billion, so maybe money doesn't move the needle for him anymore. Whatever the case, James has earned the right to walk away on his own terms, and he'll make an announcement in due time.
