Jeff Teague Silences 'Generational' Talk About Cooper Flagg

Ahead of his first NBA season during the 2025-26 campaign, Cooper Flagg will have a big role for the Dallas Mavericks. He is one of the NBA's most exciting prospects of the modern era, which has led some people to label him a generational talent.

That might be going overboard because he is only stepping up to the NBA as a teenager. He will need to prove himself first before people can call him that, which former NBA All-Star Jeff Teague pointed out.

Flagg was the #1 pick from the 2025 NBA Draft, which means people have lofty expectations. He has been one of the most well-known prospects recently, which means the hype is real coming out of Duke University.

Despite the hype, people like Teague disagree with him being called generational. That is a special title given to only a select few. For Teague, LeBron James is one of the players who can comfortably get that tag, as he has earned it all the way back to his high school days.

Teague Does Not See A Generational Talent In Flagg

The term generational has been overused these days, which puts unnecessary pressure on some players. That includes Flagg, who is a fantastic player dating back to his high school days, but generational is too much and too soon.

Teague agrees with the notion that generational is overplayed because even an all-timer like Stephen Curry was not a generational talent before he proved himself.

"Generational? No. Generational was LeBron. I don't think we would consider Steph Curry a generational talent when he first came to the league," Teague said on his Club 520 Podcast.

"We thought Zion would be generational. I think he's gonna be a really good player, though."

Flagg Has A Bright Future With The Mavericks

Despite the push back against being called generational, people do understand that Flagg has a bright future. He has a tremendous ability to defend multiple positions, and he has strong upside as an offensive player.

Thankfully, he has some talented mentors with him. Anthony Davis is the perfect veteran because he was also a #1 pick who came in with massive expectations. They have similar skill sets on defense with their versatility, and Flagg could also get to work on his offensive upside.

They also have Kyrie Irving and Klay Thompson on the Mavericks roster, so he has some offensive gurus with him. Flagg is still only a teenager, so slower growth is expected. However, he will be working hard under head coach Jason Kidd to live up to that generational tag.

The Mavericks already had a generational talent with Luka Doncic for the past few years. After he got traded, the Mavericks fans did not know what to do, but thankfully, they had the lucky roll in the Draft Lottery, which led to them getting Flagg.
