Jimmy Butler didn't live up to expectations in the Miami Heat's season opener against the Orlando Magic. Playing for 26 minutes, Butler put up just three points, with four rebounds, five assists, one steal, and one block, and went a disappointing 1-8 from the field, 0-2 from the three-point line, and 1-2 from the free-throw line.
It was a disaster class of the highest order for Butler, who will have wanted to start the season strong to add some more money onto his next contract in the NBA. The Heat will be hoping that his poor performance was an outlier, and he will get back to his usual best by the time the Heat play the Charlotte Hornets on Saturday.
For Butler, he is a player who thrives when the pressure is at its peak and he is being underestimated. We all saw what Butler did in 2023, as he took the Miami Heat from the play-in tournament all the way to the 2023 NBA Finals.
Perhaps he needs that motivation, to feel like he is being overlooked, or that the pressure is at its highest, for him to be able to return to the best version of himself with the Heat this season. The Heat want to be competitive in the East but don't have the roster that some of the other heavyweights do.
But any team that has Jimmy Butler cannot be counted out. This was a big reason why Pat Riley didn't blow up the team this past offseason and begin a rebuild. He believes in the team, which means he believes in Jimmy Butler.
That belief isn't likely to dissipate after one bad game from Butler. But he will be closely watching the Heat's opening games to start the league to see if Butler can turn things around and recover before things become concerning.
Butler's future in the NBA is not very clear. He is entering the final year of his contract with the Miami Heat, and it is not clear whether he will stay.
Butler turns 35 next year and is looking for what could be his last big payday in the NBA. There were rumors about Pat Riley wanting to move on from Butler, but he rebuked those claims in a recent interview, noting that he wants Butler to stay next year.
Another team that is reportedly interested in Jimmy Butler is the Brooklyn Nets. The Nets, who are entering a rebuild, and are projected to have a top-5 pick in the stacked 2025 NBA Draft, presumably want Butler as an All-Star culture-setter for Jordi Fernandez's new-look squad.
It all depends on Butler's motivation in this late stage of his career. If his championship aspirations are still strong, staying with the Heat gives him a better chance to compete. But on the Nets, he gets to play in the biggest market in the NBA and help mold the future of a struggling franchise.
