JJ Redick is more than happy for LeBron James to call the shots as the LA Lakers’ floor general.
The Los Angeles Lakers are starting to settle under JJ Redick, but the spotlight remains firmly on how the sophomore head coach works alongside LeBron James.
Fresh off a 111–103 win over the New Orleans Pelicans, Redick spoke candidly about learning to coach one of the game’s all-time greats.
His comments gave a clear view of the mutual respect between them — and just how much control LeBron still holds over the team, even at 41.
JJ Redick didn’t shy away from admitting that LeBron James sometimes takes over play-calling duties during games.
He didn’t stop there. Redick went on to say that sometimes LeBron simply overrules him — and he’s fine with that.
“He’s Greg Maddux at the end of his career. Every night he doesn’t have his best stuff, but he has enough to win, and I’m his catcher, so I’ve got to figure out how to call the pitch.”
“Sometimes he tells me to f— off, and he calls his own pitch, which is fine too,” Redick said, showing both humility and respect for James’ experience.
The coach made it clear that his job is to read LeBron’s energy and adjust accordingly — something he sees as a night-by-night process rather than a fixed approach.
Even in his 23rd NBA season, LeBron James remains the heartbeat of the Lakers’ offence. His understanding of the game hasn’t faded.
JJ Redick has openly embraced that, rather than trying to stamp his authority too forcefully. But that approach comes with challenges. There have been reports of other players not taking to Redick’s leadership.
It’s a reminder that while giving LeBron room to operate makes sense, Redick still needs to keep the rest of the squad pulling in the same direction.
For now, Redick seems comfortable letting LeBron set the tone. It’s brought results and a sense of stability.
The bigger question is whether that trust can extend across the whole roster — or if it will raise questions about who’s really in charge as the season unfolds.
