JJ Redick revealed the numbers that back one LA Lakers star as the offensive leader during training camp.

The Los Angeles Lakers finally notched a win in preseason, beating the Golden State Warriors 126-116 at home.

It was a solid performance across the board from the Lakers, with six players delivering 10+ point performances. Austin Reaves was the star of the night, scoring 21 points in just 22 minutes.

However, Luka Doncic told Reaves to end his night after sustaining an injury during the third quarter, forcing other stars to pick up the slack.

In his absence, Dalton Knecht stepped up as a scorer, scoring 16 points, while going 40% from beyond the arc, a marked improvement from the second half of last season.

JJ Redick claims Dalton Knecht was LA Lakers’ best offensive player in training camp

JJ Redick spoke to reporters after the LA Lakers’ first preseason win. When discussing the team’s preparation and training camp, the second-year head coach shared some interesting information.

According to Redick, Dalton Knecht was the player who had the best offensive training camp, as he scored 42 points more than every other star while shooting at about 60% from the field.

However, for all his success, Redick believed that Knecht’s ceiling would depend on how he performs defensively on a nightly basis.

“I thought he let the game come to him offensively. Did some nice things in transition, got to the free-throw line. His ceiling is going to be based on his improvement this season as a defender.

“He’s a big-time threat and a big-time player. He’s made improvements. But that’s ultimately what the ceiling is going to be for him.

“He’s had offensively, the best of any person on our team in camp. We’ve tracked everything… He’s literally the leading scorer in live play by like 42 points.

“He earned an opportunity in the starting lineup tonight. Our conversations all summer and all preseason – this is a year of development for him. What that looks like, it’s gotta be incremental. He has bought into that.”

Dalton Knecht must recover his value after poor 2025

Early in the 2024-25 NBA season, Dalton Knecht was on fire, putting up strong numbers on the bench and aiding the Lakers’ poor three-point shooting.

However, since the start of 2025, Knecht’s performances have taken a massive dip. Despite this, Austin Reaves called Knecht the Lakers’ breakout star for 2024-25.

Things only got worse in the offseason, as Dalton Knecht performed poorly in the Summer League, leading many to wonder if his early success was a flash in the pan.

JJ Redick said Knecht was burnt out at Summer League, because he was working too hard during the offseason. Hopefully, Knecht’s success in training camp is a sign of things to come in the season.
