The Los Angeles Lakers played their first preseason game on Friday night, losing to the Phoenix Suns 81-103. Despite the loss, Lakers head coach JJ Redick highlighted one player who he believes was a bright spot for his team.
In their first preseason game, the Los Angeles Lakers were without LeBron James and Luka Doncic. It was clear that both of them would have helped in possibly winning the game. Doncic had a busy summer in EuroBasket, which is why it was understandable that he sat out this game.
On the other hand, James had a nerve irritation in his glute, so he watched the game from the sidelines. The Lakers struggled because of their star players’ absence, but there were some disappointing performances, most notably from Deandre Ayton.
Despite the rough performances, Lakers head coach JJ Redick was pleased with one player. That player was Jarred Vanderbilt, one of the players that Lakers fans want to perform better this time around.
As the coach, Redick has a unique perspective on what he wants from the team. Considering this was a preseason game, he wanted to see some fight from the players, and Vanderbilt showcased that by standing out with defense and energy.
Apart from his usual traits, Vanderbilt also made some improvements to his offensive game. In the past, Vanderbilt has been seen as a liability on offense because he was an inefficient shooter, and he only thrived in the dunker’s spot or as a cutter. Despite those issues, the Lakers have held on to Vanderbilt because they know he can contribute.
Of course, that offensive breakout did not happen against the Suns, as Vanderbilt only scored one point. However, he caught Redick’s eye, and the coach was impressed by a healthy Vanderbilt working hard for the team.
“He was a bright spot. I thought his physicality, his level of conditioning, I expect him to be an elite offensive rebounder for us this year,” Redick said after the game.
“He’s really worked on his shot. I know it didn’t show tonight, but he’s worked on a shot, he’s getting more and more comfortable shooting spot-up threes. I expected him to be an impact player for us.”
A big story for the Lakers has been Vanderbilt’s improvements as a shooter. That is significant for the team because they need more spot-up shooters. Considering Vanderbilt is not a well-known threat, he could take advantage and knock down some shots in the 2025-26 season.
Jake LaRavia has pointed out that Vanderbilt has improved his shooting in the offseason. The Lakers need his contributions to justify him getting regular minutes. In the past, they have struggled because his defensive value was superb, but the lack of offensive firepower became an issue.

With Redick taking notice of his efforts in the offseason, Vanderbilt might have a big role in their 2025-26 season. Of course, Rui Hachimura might start ahead of him, but Vanderbilt will play an important role off the bench as a disruptive defender who can apparently shoot now.
If he can reach his ceiling, the Lakers might have a hidden weapon. Doncic and James are the top stars, but if they can reliably pass to Vanderbilt to hit shots and still defend at the highest level, the Lakers could have a more well-rounded team.
