The Los Angeles Lakers have finally made a significant move in the offseason by signing Deandre Ayton out of free agency. As this move is being celebrated by fans of the franchise, Lakers head coach JJ Redick would be particularly happy about this addition.
A resurfaced video displayed Redick sharing his real thoughts on Ayton. The former analyst had nothing but praise for the talented center when he said:
"Ayton’s fantastic... He’s fantastic at punishing mismatches. In the two-man pick-and-roll with him and [Chris Paul], they’re the No. 1 offensive duo among high-volume pick-and-roll players… So he is fantastic.”

Redick highlighted how solid the pairing of Chris Paul and Ayton had been for the Suns, specifically out of the pick-and-roll. Paul's mastery of the point guard position only served to bring the best out of the big man.
By the looks of it, Redick had every reason to be enamored by Ayton's ability and potential. During his time with the Phoenix Suns, he looked like one of the best big men in the game, notching an average of 16.7 points and 10.4 rebounds a game during his tenure.
Since leaving the Suns, Ayton has had some struggles with matching these figures, but he remains productive all the same. Coming off a season of averaging 14.4 points and 10.2 rebounds per game with the Portland Trail Blazers, the 26-year-old is a truly special talent.
The opportunities for Ayton to be successful with the Lakers are endless. The potential pick-and-roll plays with him and Luka Doncic will pose a nightmare matchup for opposition defenses.
Although there is more to be demanded of his defensive effort, the Lakers will breathe a sigh of relief after having acquired a center. With one part of their offseason plan checked off, the Purple and Gold will proceed with adding depth to their roster.
The rumors linking Chris Paul with the Los Angeles franchises have been an interesting point of conversation in the offseason. While Paul would undoubtedly show more of an interest towards joining his former team, the Clippers, the Lakers could present a great opportunity for the veteran.
Redick's comments about Ayton also considered the role Paul played in bringing the best out of him. Given his experiences of playing alongside the big man, signing Paul could be a priority for the Lakers if they want Ayton to play to his potential.
Paul's relationship with LeBron James also becomes a viable point in this context. Especially considering the current situation between James and the Lakers organization, acquiring the veteran may help the Purple and Gold retain their superstar, too.
The challenge in completing this deal is rooted in Paul's desires. With a report by Associated Press' Tim Reynolds suggesting that the 40-year-old is yet to sign a contract only because he intends to be a starter, the Lakers may have a tough time convincing him to join.
