Minnesota Timberwolves rookie Joan Beringer has multiple mentor options as he begins his NBA career.
The 18-year-old has gained spotlight during preseason , most recently scoring 14 points against the Denver Nuggets.
Having numerous mentors has accelerated Beringer’s development heading into his first season.
He can learn from veteran guard Mike Conley, who provides locker room leadership, or position-specific guidance from Rudy Gobert, his fellow Frenchman at center.
Beringer can also study superstar Anthony Edwards, from whom the rookie says he learns constantly.
“He’s an amazing player, I really learn from him like really every day. I just enjoy to play with him, with the team in general,” Beringer explained about Edwards.
He also highlighted Gobert’s mentorship extending beyond basketball fundamentals.
“Very good, he’s very experienced, I really have fun with him, every day he gives me some advice like on the court and off the court. I have a very good relationship with Rudy,” he stated.
The abundance of mentorship has facilitated Beringer’s growth, according to head coach Chris Finch.
The coach provided his assessment of the rookie’s adaptation process.
“Good for most part, I think you see some normal rookie stuff, now he’s starting to think more, and it’ll come back to being instinctual,” Finch said.
“I think he’s done a great job with everything that’s coming fast at him. Sometimes we got to slow down a little bit and check how much English he’s really absorbing in the moment. So, we’re pleased.”
“His IQ and feel is outstanding given his experience level. I think there’s things that we need him to do more of in our system that he needs to start adding, but that’ll come,” he added.
Initially, Beringer may not occupy a significant role in the rotation.
However, if he continues learning and adapting quickly to the Timberwolves‘ system requirements, he has potential to eventually become Gobert’s successor at center.
