John Collins is finally free, following trade to Utah Jazz

According to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, John Collins is heading to the Utah Jazz. The deal appears to be a salary dump from the Atlanta Hawks. By allowing the versatile forward to leave for pennies on the dollar, Atlanta has made their feelings on Collins's fit with their franchise abundantly clear.

In recent seasons, Collins has been one of the most talented players on Atlanta's roster. Yet, the 25-year-old forward has continued to find his name in trade rumors. The writing has been on the wall for over a year. During that time, Collins had been criminally underused by the Hawks.

Under Nate McMillian, Atlanta ran a two-man game between Trae Young and Dejounte Murray. When Quin Snyder became the head coach, the Hawks produced a more fluid style of play, but Collins once again found himself left out.

Now, Collins will have a chance to play for his hometown team. The Utah Jazz boasts an exciting roster led by up-and-coming head coach Will Hardy. Front office member Danny Ainge has been tracking Collins since he was still in charge of the Boston Celtics. Finally, Collins will be joining a franchise that wants him to be there.

Furthermore, Utah will be able to feature Collins within their offense. Playing alongside Lauri Markkanen, Collins will likely be one of Utah's primary scoring options. Defensively, we could witness the start of a front-court partnership that becomes stifling for opposing offenses.

Collins deserves an opportunity to show what he can do when he's trusted by the coaching staff and front office. After multiple years of being unwanted, underused, and undervalued, Collins is finally heading to a new situation. The Hawks, however, have let one of their better talents leave for nothing. Atlanta will need to move swiftly to show their fanbase they have a plan in place. Otherwise, if Collins plays his best basketball for Utah, this move could come back to haunt the Hawks.
