Reunions often uncover the truth behind unresolved narratives. Jonathan Kuminga was recently against his former side, the Warriors, and finally spoke about his popular relationship with Steve Kerr.
He shut down all the rumors with a mature and professional stance. Kuminga said, “I’m here, very happy, doing great.” He immediately declined all the negative talk about his departure from the Warriors.
He also addressed his relationship with Kerr directly. Standing on his past stance from Oct 2025, where he said there was “no bad b****” among them. The main problems were only about a lack of communication. He just wanted a proper understanding of his role in the team.

The main cause of tension between Kuminga and Kerr was not hidden from the media and fans. He was frustrated by a reduced role, irregular minutes, and a lack of trust shown in him by the staff. Even Steve Kerr was not happy and often questioned his overall spirit towards the team’s goals.
Many other minor incidents worked only as fuel to the fire. Coach once made post-match comments about resting players other than the stars. Kuminga took this comment as a direct slight on himself.
During a game, Kuminga was repeatedly seen looking off Stephen Curry, which led to intense frustration for the head coach. All these incidents build up the case for a permanent split.
The trade deal finally happened in early Feb 2026. The Warriors sent Buddy Hield and Jonathan Kuminga to the Hawks in a direct swap for Kristaps Porzingis. Kerr handled the post-deal talks with complete maturity, calling it a tough choice but in favor of the team.
With a consistent role and renewed freedom, Kuminga’s confidence has visibly boosted. Since his arrival, the Hawks have won 12 of their last 13 matches.
During his final games for the Warriors, he was averaging around 12 PPG and was also unhappy about the uncertainty in his role. In his debut match for the Hawks, he bagged 27 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists.
Even after the tough exit from the Warriors team, his bonding with ex-teammates seems exceptionally strong. In a recent reunion match, he had a long, warm talk with Curry on the floor. He also said that he stays in touch on a regular basis with Draymond Green.
Above all, Kuminga has handled this complete transition pretty well. The media often tried to set an extreme narrative during his final phases with the Warriors. Still, his focus and calm response painted a completely different story.
What once felt like a messy split now seems to be the precise move for everyone involved.
