Jonathan Kuminga has chosen not to attend the Golden State Warriors media day as he holds out for a new contract.
Jonathan Kuminga has been the biggest talking point for the Golden State Warriors this summer. The 2021 lottery pick has held out the entire summer for his ideal contract.
Most recently, Kuminga turned down a $75 million contract from the Warriors, the latest rejection in a summer full of them.
The reason for this latest rejection was simple – Kuminga wants the Warriors to add a player option to the deal.
While Kuminga is okay taking less money to help the Warriors, he wants the player option in the deal. And his demands have led him to make a controversial decision for this week.
According to Shams Charania and Anthony Slater of ESPN, Jonathan Kuminga has not made his way to San Francisco to attend the Golden State Warriors media day on September 29th.
The Warriors reached out to Kuminga and his agent to help further their negotiations. But so far, there are no signs of the two sides agreeing to a new deal.
“Kuminga did not travel to San Francisco this weekend and won’t be in attendance for Monday’s media day, league sources told ESPN.
“Golden State general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. made contact with Kuminga’s agent, Aaron Turner, on Sunday, but there’s no momentum toward a Kuminga contract or return prior to the team’s first practice on Tuesday.”
This is a very interesting development, given that we are days away from the Warriors’ October 1st deadline for Kuminga to opt into his $7.9 million player option.
Jonathan Kuminga didn't travel to the Bay Area this weekend and he won't be at Media Day tomorrow. There remains no tangible movement toward a contract resolution as the basketball portion of the NBA calendar arrives.

After an entire summer of doing nothing, the Warriors have become active again. The Warriors put their offseason on pause for Jonathan Kuminga, but that is no longer the case.
Yesterday, the Warriors signed Al Horford, De’Anthony Melton, and Gary Payton II to new contracts, finally adding to their roster after months of inactivity.

Furthermore, the Warriors are also interested in landing Seth Curry. However, they will have to wait and see what decision Jonathan Kuminga makes to see if they have the cap room for it.
The Warriors made a right mess of their offseason recruitment. Hopefully, after the Jonathan Kuminga situation is resolved, the Warriors can get back on track and capitalize on one of the final years of Stephen Curry.
