Jonathan Kuminga May Opt For $7.9 Million Qualifying Offer With Warriors

The Golden State Warriors' offseason dealings have been held up by the contract negotiations with Jonathan Kuminga. With roadblocks emerging at every turn, ESPN's Anthony Slater reported that Kuminga may be inclined to take the $7.9 million qualifying offer instead. He wrote:

"So, everything sits in the same spot it did 10 days ago. The Warriors have not upped their offer, and Kuminga has indicated to those close to him that the $7.9 million qualifying offer is more appealing to him than the Warriors' current pitch. Something has to give before the Oct. 1 deadline."

Slater pointed out that there had been no movement toward compromise from either side. Needless to say, the deadlock has proven to be mutually detrimental.

The 22-year-old forward has expressed his interest in parting ways with Golden State in pursuit of a more significant role and a larger contract. Given the Warriors' current roster and salary cap situation, neither is possible.

Regardless, the Dubs have displayed a keen interest in retaining the forward. When considering his physical tools, athleticism, and strong developmental potential, it is evident why the Warriors organization views him as a piece for the future.

Unfortunately, this outlook hasn't been reflected in their contract offer for Kuminga.

The Warriors reportedly offered a two-year, $40 million deal. While this is already underwhelming, it also included a team option in the final year of the contract, which would effectively restrict the forward's movement again.

This offer falls far short of Kuminga's expectations, who is expecting a three-year deal in the $80 million range. Reports have also suggested that the forward would be inclined to accept a deal with a player option. Unfortunately, the Warriors have not budged.

Aside from contract discussions, the Dubs have also taken a firm stance while engaging in trade negotiations involving Kuminga. 

Teams such as the Phoenix Suns and the Sacramento Kings have presented intriguing proposals, with the Kings being viewed favorably by the forward. But Golden State hasn't agreed to any deal, primarily due to their demands not being met. 

In this regard, recent rumors have also linked the Warriors with the Chicago Bulls for Josh Giddey, but there have been no developments on this front.

Kuminga's decision to take the qualifying offer would align with the growing trend among restricted free agents this offseason. Accepting less money may not be in his best interests, but it ensures that he will enter free agency next summer.

The delays in negotiations only create further complications for the Warriors, as their roster construction remains incomplete because of this ordeal. Meanwhile, Kuminga would find himself in poor standing with the rest of the team if he returns. Overall, neither side stands to gain anything from dragging this out any further.
