Restricted NBA free agent Jonathan Kuminga won’t be traded by the Golden State Warriors this offseason, according to Tim Kawakami of The San Francisco Standard.
Kuminga will begin the 2025-26 season with the Warriors, who haven’t liked what the Sacramento Kings or Phoenix Suns have offered them in sign-and-trade talks.
“The word I got when I checked in with a Warriors source on Sunday: Jonathan Kuminga won’t be traded this summer. He’ll be back on the Warriors’ roster to start the season. And it’ll either come when he signs the Warriors’ offer or accepts the $7.9 million one-year qualifying offer,” Kawakami wrote.
Kuminga wants to leave the Warriors and play for the Kings, but Golden State controls the swingman’s future since he’s a restricted free agent.
The Suns and Kings can’t sign Kuminga to an offer sheet because they are over the cap. All signs point toward Kuminga playing next season with the Warriors on a one-year qualifying offer and then hitting unrestricted free agency next offseason.
“But several sources have indicated that the Warriors have been unenthusiastic about the general idea of a Kuminga sign-and-trade from the outset. The broad context is that Joe Lacob remains a fan of Kuminga’s and is determined to either keep the 22-year-old on the roster or get real value in return. And he’s willing to wait it out,” Kawakami wrote.
Kuminga was the seventh overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft. The forward enters next season with career averages of 12.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.8 assists with the Warriors.
A one-time NBA champion, Kuminga averaged 15.3 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.2 assists for Golden State last season in 47 games. He shot 45.4% from the field, 30.5% from beyond the arc and 66.8% from the free-throw line.
The Warriors lost to the Minnesota Timberwolves in the second round of the 2025 playoffs in five games. They haven’t been able to make any moves this offseason because of Kuminga’s restricted free agency.
Once Kuminga signs his offer sheet, Golden State is expected to sign Al Horford and De’Anthony Melton and re-sign Gary Payton II.
