With nearly a month left until the start of the 2025-26 NBA season, the Golden State Warriors find themselves in a strange situation.
After acquiring Jimmy Butler from the Miami Heat ahead of last season's trade deadline, Golden State immediately elevated itself to legitimate title contention. Furthermore, as it stands, they remain a team to keep an eye on in the West. However, they still have many pressing questions to answer, and many of them have to do with forward Jonathan Kuminga.
Kuminga is still a restricted free agent, and what his future holds is up in the air. It remains to be seen if he will stay with the Warriors, and even if he does, it is unclear what the contract may look like.
Regardless, it seems that the 22-year-old is open to remaining in Golden State, mostly to help teammates Stephen Curry and Draymond Green win another championship, while helping Butler win his first, but, according to Anthony Slater of ESPN, only under the condition that his next contract includes a player option.
"I actually talked to Aaron Turner, Jonathan Kuminga's agent, this morning, and the messaging they're adopting this week is, turn the T.O. (team option) to a P.O. (player option), and it's done," Slater said on Tuesday. "That messaging is generally saying if it's a team option on that three-year deal you mentioned, $74-ish million, if that's suddenly a player option, not only will Jonathan Kuminga sign it, they're saying, but he will be completely bought in on the mission that they're asking of him...that is to get Steph Curry and Draymond Green a fifth ring, Jimmy Butler his first ring."

Following Slater's report, it still remains to be seen what will come of the Kuminga saga in Golden State. However, the Congo native reportedly sent a message regarding Curry that could provide some insight on what his immediate future may look like.
Slater reported that Kuminga could be all in on helping his top Warriors teammates add a first or fifth ring to their resume before they call it a career. Recently, the Congo native's agent echoed this on an episode of "The Hoop Collective" podcast.
“And we all move on and worry about winning and like he said, helping Steph. And he said this in the meeting with Joe (Lacob), you know, 'I'm all in to help Steph. Let's send him out. We should be focused on winning right now, and I'm fine with that,'" Turner said about Kuminga.
Kuminga has shown flashes during his time in Golden State, but it is also fair to wonder if the team has stunted his development due to not giving him consistent playing time or opportunities.
If the two sides can work things out and keep the relationship going, then Kuminga may ultimately get exactly what he is looking for and could blossom as an NBA player. However, if not, then at the very least, he could become a key player in Golden State's quest to win its fifth championship with Curry and Green on the roster.
