New Orleans Pelicans center Zion Williamson’s signature shoe line is being discontinued by Jordan. He signed the deal before even entering the NBA and was the second-largest rookie shoe deal ever ($75M), behind only LeBron James ($90M).
His injuries, limited on-court availability, and underwhelming sales are believed to have contributed to the decision. The Jordan Zion 4 was expected to be the final release.
Williamson’s shoes are not selling because he is not very marketable these days. Zion has not lived up to the hype surrounding his arrival from the Duke Blue Devils.
Jordan’s retro line of sneakers is too powerful and features various athletes’ releases under the brand. Nike is always the way to go. They are more versatile in their line ups with players like LeBron, Kobe Bryant and Houston Rockets small forward Kevin Durant.
Zion is the greatest wasted potential in NBA history. Everyone remembers when his mixtapes blew up in high school. Nobody can forget his 2019 NBA debut, hitting 4/4 from three-point range against the San Antonio Spurs. Most people thought he was going to dominate the league.
Williamson could have had it all; he just could not take care of himself and stay on the court. Michael Jordan thought he was worth the investment.
No brand is going to give him a signature sneaker again unless he turns his career around. It is surprising that he lasted that long with Jordan Brand.
The negative press he has received, with incidents involving women such as the Moriah Mills situation, is not helping him. It will be interesting to see which major brand and company will want to deal with him.
