Jordan Ott is thrilled with the Phoenix Suns’ latest acquisition, who was once a Detroit Pistons draft pick.

A new era is beginning for the Phoenix Suns. After the Suns traded Kevin Durant to the Houston Rockets, they are entering the rebuilding phase for the first time under owner Mat Ishbia.

The Suns hired Jordan Ott as their head coach, poaching him away from the Cleveland Cavaliers, where he was an assistant coach.

Now, as the Suns are inching toward a buyout with Bradley Beal, they must focus on their future. The Suns drafted Khaman Maluach with the #10 overall pick in the draft.

But they’ve also been active in the free agent market. The Suns’ biggest signing so far has been Mark Williams.

However, Ott has been most vocal in his praise of a former Detroit Pistons draft pick that the Suns signed to a two-way contract recently.

Jordan Ott says Isaiah Livers is exactly who the Phoenix Suns needed

The Phoenix Suns signed former Detroit Pistons player Isaiah Livers to a two-way contract. Livers was the #42 pick in the 2021 NBA Draft.

Ott was thrilled with the signing of Livers, as he believes the star has the size and the shooting ability this new-look Suns roster sorely needed. The head coach is expecting big things from him heading into training camp.

“Isaiah brings a shooting piece, a size piece we’re looking for on this roster. He has been injured, but now he’s back.

“He’s fully healthy. He’s been here. Excited to see him more this summer, into training camp and into the season.”

Livers was impressive during his stint with the Pistons. However, he spent all of last season on the sidelines after undergoing hip surgery that kept him out for a year.

Isaiah Livers could develop into starting player under Jordan Ott

While Isaiah Livers didn’t put up jaw-dropping numbers during his time with the Detroit Pistons, he played his role perfectly well.

In his rookie year, he shot 42.2% from beyond the arc. While his numbers from distance did drop off in the years since, his injuries and subsequent trade to the Wizards mid-season did play a role in that.

Furthermore, Livers is also an active defender, averaging one steal every two games throughout his NBA career.

If Ott and the Suns can develop him in the right way, he can be a useful piece for them off the bench. At 26 going on 27, Livers is not the young prospect who can develop into a future superstar.

However, asking him to make certain tweaks and changes could allow him to play a significant role for the Suns this season.
