Josh Hart Reveals True Thoughts on Potential Contract Extension for New York Knicks Coach
Wendell Cruz-USA TODAY Sports

The New York Knicks have a lot of decisions to make during the offseason, including Tom Thibodeau’s extension as the team’s head coach. For Josh Hart, though, the front office should hand out a contract he rightfully deserves.

Thibodeau spent the first 20 years of his career as an assistant coach for various teams in the NBA. These include the Minnesota Timberwolves, San Antonio Spurs, Philadelphia 76ers, New York Knicks, Houston Rockets, and Boston Celtics.

After his long years as an assistant coach, Thibodeau finally got the head coaching gig for the Chicago Bulls in 2010. From there, the Connecticut native moved on to the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2016, a franchise where he also served as an executive until 2019.

Due to his reputation of playing his starters long minutes and failure to reach at least the NBA Finals, Thibodeau didn’t have a coaching job for quite a while. That changed in 2020 when the Knicks hired him to coach the team. Fortunately, he transformed New York from a consistently disappointing franchise to a true playoff contender with All-Star point guard Jalen Brunson as the key piece of their roster.

Josh Hart Says Tom Thibodeau Should Get Contract He Deserves From New York Knicks

Even though New York’s season has ended at the hands of the Indiana Pacers, they still showed a lot of promise in this year’s playoffs. For his part, Knicks star Josh Hart has come out and said Thibodeau should have the contract he deserves from the franchise. In an article written by Dan Martin for the New York Post:

“And while Tom Thibodeau still has a year left on his five-year deal, the topic of a new deal for the head coach will be a significant one this summer.

Hart made it clear he wants Thibodeau around for a long time.

Asked if he hoped Thibodeau gets a new contract soon, Hart said, “He deserves it. He’s someone that works extremely hard and he prepares us. He makes sure we have the right mindset. But it’s not in my hands,” Martin wrote.

In the four seasons Thibodeau coached the Knicks, the team had a record of 318 wins and 175 losses. Furthermore, New York made the playoffs thrice in the four years he served as head coach.

It remains to be seen what the Knicks’ front office will do about Thibodeau’s contract extension. But if Hart is to be followed, the fiery head coach won’t go anywhere else.
