Julius Erving Says Daughter Alexandra Stevenson Was Conceived Because Her Mother Had Braces: ‘Oral Sex Was Not An Option’

In 71 years of life, Julius Erving has had nine children, four with Turquoise Erving and four with Dorýs Madden. The number nine was probably the most controversial story in Erving's life, but he managed to keep things quiet until it was too late. 

Back in 1979, the Philadelphia 76ers, New Jersey Nets legend began an affair with sportswriter Samantha Stevenson, which resulted in the birth of Alexandra Stevenson, who would become a tennis star years later. 

Dr. J tried to keep that side of his life hidden, but things come to light sooner or later. Great as he was on the court, Erving made some mistakes in his personal life, some that cost him more than others. In his autobiography “Dr. J”, the 1893 NBA champion revealed details of his relationship with Samantha Stevenson (via Total Pro Sports). 

“She becomes someone who helps me unwind if I’m feeling high-strung or stressed. I can drive over and spend a relaxing evening that might even include oral sex,” Erving wrote.

The biggest/most curious part of the story is when Julius talks about the conception of Alexandra. At the time of the encounter, Samantha had brand new braces, which took oral sex off the table. 

“I can only remember one time that we actually had intercourse, and that was because she had just gotten this new orthodontia to straighten her teeth. With wire and gleaming metal bristling in her mouth, oral sex was not an option.”

Julius could not develop a relationship with Alexandra until 2004, where they met and started to make things better. Right now, Stevenson works at ESPN as a commentator years after reaching the Wimbledon semi-finals in 1999.
